I'm probably the only one on here that their tube table runner didn't turn out right. Somehow I've lost most of my points and one block was smaller than the other two, so I made them all the size of the small one. I didn't want to take it all apart so I went ahead and sewed the blocks and put on the border. Does anyone have any ideas as to what went wrong? When I bind it I will post a picture.

What I found is that it's pretty easy to be inconsistent with cutting - I had to be sure to have the cut for the top of the triangle, end at the top seam line - not the top edge of the fabric.

I am using a 45 degree triangle ruler, flipping it top and bottom to make the cuts, so I took a little extra time to be sure I was making the same cuts each time.

I think the next time, I'll mark the ruler with painter's masking tape, so I get the same cut each time!

Someone posted a revision a while back to keep the points from being cut off...

Sounds like you may have put the bottom of the ruler on the bottom of the strip rather than on the seam line. especially since they came out different sizes.

I'm with Tippy - sounds like that odd one was measured from the edge and not the seam.

one other problem with that method is that all your block seams end up on the bias. it helps to press extra carefully to ensure the blocks start out even and properly sized. you should sew extra carefully for the same reason.

if you cut your strips on the bias to start with, you will have to sew carefully to assemble them and to make the tube. however, when you cut the tube into blocks, they're easier to deal with because the bias "goes away".

starch the fabs stiff as a board and the whole thing is easier no matter how you cut your strips.

as to disappearing points ... who but you will know they weren't supposed to be that way all along? just because they don't look as expected, don't assume they don't still look just fine. :wink:

Hey you make it what you want. it's your quilt, runner that is. lost points are from the top of your ruler being placed on the top edge, past the seam line. place it lower, just to the seam line and you will get your point.
good luck-next time. don't give up on the runner though. it will be interesting and you can say "I made it that way on purpose".

Are they? I'd like to know for sure before trying this. :? There's nothing more frustrating to me then a pattern that isn't correct. I hate going to all that trouble to not have it turn out right.

I think the issue was with the 45 degree line of the ruler being laid on the seam line and not the edge of the fabric, if you do not want the points cut off. If your sewn fabric strips are the same width as the solid strip, and you cut, sew and press accurately, the pattern is easy to do.

If your ruler is taller than your fabric strips, line the fabric strips along a line on your mat and then align the 45 degree line of your ruler along another line below it, so you keep your ruler straight when cutting.

I was pretty sure I put the ruler on the seam line, but maybe in haste I didn't. When I cut the two larger blocks to size of smaller one, could it be possible I cut the points off? I'm going to post a picture of what I have done. Thanks everyone.

I think you probably did....as that would most likely been the way you would normally square up a block. I am sorry this isn't turning out the way you wanted... But I will say I may a pretty quilt top and ALL of the points are intentionally missing and it came out very nice looking :wink:

I am putting the borders on a table runner made with the tube quilting method. It has turned out pretty well. The measurement error in the tutorial occurs when she says the two strips measure 4 1/4 when sewn together, when in fact the measurement is 4 1/2 inches. I used strips I had left over from another project and the table runner is for a Christmas exchange for my guild. Was not going to participate, but with this quick method and strips already cut, changed my mind.
