On my wish list

I found a pattern on Etsy for one of the most spectacular quilts. It's paper pieced ( I don't do) and the quilting only adds to it's beauty. Has any one ever done a pickled orange peal?? Was it difficult? Did it cost a small fortune to have it professionally quilted?? I can see myself working on this all winter if I go slow and take my time not to mess up....I may have to learn paper piecing.

I have not done that pattern but I have done a NY Beauty which is similar. It wasn't horrible, lol. I had wanted to learn to do paper piecing and that was the pattern for the class. After the first few sections it gets pretty easy and repetitive. Jump in there - you can do it!

Carol Doak, the paper piecing Queen, has a book called "Teach Me to Paper Piece". It's an excellent book with good pics of each step. It's the book I use when I teach a paper piecing class. Paper piecing seems a bit backward at first, but it soon everything falls into a familiar pattern and you should have no trouble. You may also find some free online instructions on how to paper piece. Give it a try! That Pickled Orange Peel quilts awaits you:-)

Gals and gents, believe me, paper piecing is not all that hard if you take your time. My 1st PP project was Jenny Beyer's Crystal Star wallhanging. 150 different fabrics used around the star with a dark background and a border fabric. Picked up all the fabrics at Jenny Beyer's back then as she had pre-cut pieces just wide/long enough for the larger size. She gave out a video how to miter cut the special border fabric. That decided for me that I love paper piecing. I gave the wallhanging to my massage gal and she has it in her room where I get to see it every 2 weeks when I go to see her.............like today in about an hour.

Since then I've used EQ8 to help me make PP blocks from time to time as it gives you precision stitchouts especially those nasty little points, etc. Here's my 1st PP project. Plus I used embroidery metallic thread to E2E quilt.

Give it a try and see what you think about PP. True, having to pull off all the paper backing may be a pain but the finish is so worth it in my book.

In my opinion, Pickled Orange Peel is slightly easier then Double Wedding Ring. The traditional piecing way is for confident quilters but paper piecing should make the pattern easier.

There are some good tips on this link, plus she has a few free patterns to practice before you get into your “winter” project. 😀

lindaschipper, you didn't say why you don't do paper piecing. Is it just something you don't enjoy, or you haven't learned to yet, or you don't like the wasted fabric? I learned when doing the Harriet's Journey sew-along a couple of years ago, and it isn't hard at all, just different.

I don't think I'd try to traditionally piece the pickled peel quilt, but I might have a go at paper-piecing it.

Beautiful quilt.

Accuquilt has a die that might work for the pattern.

Carol Doak has a dvd Teaches You to Paperpiece. It is wonderful. Once you learn the basic way to pp then all the other different ways will make sense. I loaned out my cd so much it has worn out. I haven't seen one since that was so easy to watch and understand about paperpiecing. The DVD is usually about $6 on ebay.
