Mystery Quilt pattern
I am looking for a mystery quilt that I could teach at my local guild. I want something new that hasn't been seen yet (at least here in Arizona). OR I would be ok to design one if there are some tips and tricks to turning the pattern into a mystery quilt. Any ideas?

There are many that you can find via Google that are already set up as a Mystery.
If I was going to use them for a Guild, I would make sure that I had made the whole quilt first, to ensure the directions are clear. And that the members would not be dismayed once they start. In selecting, consider your members and the range of abilities they represent, and try to pick a pattern that all can do ... and not too easy (or boring!) for the more experienced sewers. Also, would they prefer one that is "scrappy" so they can work from their stash? or that requires yardage, and thus, most likely they would need to purchase. Good Luck ... and Have FUN!!! |

Why don't you try Heather Spence Designs? http://www.heatherspencedesigns.com/mystery-quilt/ She does two email mystery quilts a year, and the proceeds go to a cancer patient who needs help with medical bills. We just did one at a retreat, and it's pretty and not thousands of pieces.

I agree ... make the whole quilt first so you can spot where you need to clarify directions. Better yet, write your directions and get a friend to make the quilt. She will have a different point of view that you would and might spot things you would take for granted.
I do like to have cutting instructions so I can do as much as possible before getting together to sew. I just don''t cut well with others as I am too distractable. ali |

I've run the Patchwork Puzzle by Judy Hopkins (at the URL quoted) for a couple of groups of ladies here in the UK BUT I pieced the quilt differently. Where there are Flying geese units and a plain strip added I used a square and did 'sew and flip' corners to give this unit (one less seam to sew and show). Then I didn't make 'puss in the corner' blocks. Just a whole lot of 4 patches. Once you've done these two units sewing them together with more plain squares is a breeze. Study the picture and I hope all this makes sense. Doris in the UK |
