I'm in....I would prefer the lap quilt to a wall hanging also. Will you be including instructions for both?
When do we start?

Cordelia 07-13-2008 08:16 AM

Everybody, I have been deliberately vague. I don't want to spoil it.

I will give you all the yardages and numbers of different fabrics. Since people are expressing an interest in a lap quilt over the wall hanging, I have to recalculate it and the quilt program does that.

I'll have to enlarge it a bit. I can do that with no problem, just can't do it right now.

I would rate this project intermediate because there are a few applique pieces (optional if you put them on) and foundation pieced pieces.

I'll provide the templates. I think I can actually post them in here and you can download them and print them when we get to that part. If I can't post them here, I'll e-mail them to everyone and you can print them.

Terri, Santas and Snowmen are kind of out of character ... But, you don't need to buy the fabrics I posted. You can "glitter" up fabrics. I tend to go into "overkill" mode with the Christmas fabrics and ALWAYS select the most BLING. I like glitz.

If anyone has an embroidery machine, for the outdoorsy version, if anyone has snowflake embroidery patterns, with silver or white thread, they'd look really cool.

I'll get you the total number of fabrics and yardage tomorrow or Tuesday. I've got a big job tomorrow and don't know if I'll be able to get on line tomorrow.

There's no comittment here. I'll post all the infor and you can follow along and decide if it's something you want to make. I'm going to have a couple more options along the way to choose from to keep it interesting.

Also, I'll post pictures and diagrams as we go along IF you want me to. Let me know and I'll do it. If some directions need a picture, I'll post it.

Cordelia 07-13-2008 08:28 AM

When do we start?
Let me just lay out a plan.

If this could be sort of a weekender thing, that'd be good.

Since I'm going to rough over the calculations to change it to a lap quilt, can we start next weekend?

I'll keep posting fabric images and suggestions for you and will be giving yardages throughout the week.

Everyone is welcome to follow along and this design is totally for everyone who wants it. There's no copyright issue because it's my "Merry Christmas" to everyone.

Knot Sew 07-13-2008 10:34 AM

Everybody, I've had a minute to drop in.

I'm posting some other fabric samples that you'll need. Check your stash and see what you've got!

GOLD! Does anyone have gold? Glitzy gold?

You'll need at least a half a yard of glitzy gold. But, if you don't have it, mix and match with other golds, yellows. It doesn't all have to be the same fabric.

This is for both "wintery" option and the traditional option. OOOPS! Gold for traditional, silver for winter option. I posted a couple silver options for the winter version.

Sorry for the confusion.

Avoid florals. Try to use something like the picture. The picture is a Robert Kaufman fabric.

Be prepared to spray on some glitter spray! I use it all the time and turn ordinary fabric into holiday sparkle.

Now it's time to talk prints.

This is the print I'm going to use from "In The Beginning" Wintergraphix collection.

Regardless of your choice, you'll need a Christmas floral. (and I'll tell you how much tomorrow night.)

Just samples/ideas/options.

Blues for outdoors wintery style, reds/greens for traditional.

Can I ask a couple of questions please, The silver and blue pointsetta fabric, who makes it? Found all the others on a site, but canīt see this one.

Also will this last 6 months or longer? I am kinda thinking it is 6 months but just checking. Will there be 1 or 2 blocks a month?

Thanks Elle

Margandi 07-17-2008 04:15 AM

Sounds like a lot of fun. I have some Christmas fabric that has just been waiting for a project.

The blue and silver pointsettas were from 'Holiday Classics' collection by Laurie Godin for Northcott.

I only posted those for ideas.

I've got the yardages, but hope most of you have comparable fabrics so you don't have to go out and buy all of it. I don't want to tax anyone's budget.

I have to confess that I only made up the wall hanging, not the lap size. So, with that understanding, I'll be making it with all of you.

I'm going to post the fabric images again and put the yardages in the caption box for the image.

This quilt measures 53" x 53". (this is per the program. I hadn't made it yet. I will be making it if you want to wait and watch ...)

Is that large enough for a lap quilt? I hope you have most of this in your stash already.

For the wintery scene you will need:

1/8 YARD of light to medium brown. (no pattern, solid or batik)

This sample is Hoffman's Weekend in the Woods - Snowflake Rapture - Cobalt/Silver. 1/3 YARD

This sample is Hoffman's Venetian Holiday - Dainty Poinsettias - Chambray Blue/Pearl. You need a light, icy blue-like comparable fabric: 1/2 YARD

This sample is Hoffman's Winter Radiance - Snowflake Escape - Sky Blue/Silver Metallic. 1 YARD

Cordelia 07-17-2008 07:10 AM

I'm sorry. I have to run to my job. I'll be back to post the rest this p.m.

I'm also going to post the first clue Friday evening. There will be roughly six clues with sewing instructions.

There is an applique component to this that will be the very last thing. It will be optional for you and that will be done over and above the clues.

beachlady 07-17-2008 01:52 PM

I apologize for the interruption. Jobs can seriously interfere with sewing.

You'll notice a lot of these fabrics are similar. The point is texture and shading. If you don't go out and buy the exact suggestions, mix and match a couple dark blue snowflakey patterns together.

The final selections:

The applique portion is above and beyond these yardages. It will be two other fabrics, a medium blue batikish, no purple, no green and a small portion of white fabric or another suggestion I'll post. I won't be a lot.

I hope everyone has lots and lots of winter Christmas fabrics already and don't have to buy too much. I've got a bunch myself and am going to be using my stash. I probably will have to buy about 3 yards or so though.

I'm going to put a Christmas floral on as a backing for mine. So, that will raise up the yardage. That's optional. For the Winter Scene version, for backing, I'd probably use the Hoffman's Winter Radiance - Reindeer Stroll - Midnight Blue/Silver. But anyone of them would be fine.

Hoffman's Weekend in the Woods - Twinkling Skies - Cobalt/Silver. 5 1/2 Yards. I used a large chunk of this throughout the pattern. You'll need it.

I don't think I will be able to post the first clue until late Friday or early Saturday. But, I'll have it up there in time for anyone who wants to start on it this weekend.

marieg 07-17-2008 04:35 PM

I'm so confused 1/2 yard of tannish brown solid, how much of the 13 others. Sorry confuse easily.

Cordelia 07-17-2008 04:44 PM

I put the yardages in the caption box portion of the images. I thought that would be easier.

But, now that I think of it, it might be easier if you saw them next to the list now that I think of it.

beachlady 07-17-2008 06:12 PM

It would be easier for me (I am dense) to have the yardage next to the colors on the list. Thanks. Some you listed at 5 1/2 yards - sounds like alot for a lap quilt.

Cordelia 07-17-2008 06:39 PM

Well, the ones at 5 1/2 yards are used throughout the quilt.

I added two borders to it to make it a lap quilt and the thing came out to 53" x 53". It originally was 37" x 37" as a wall hanging.

It does sound like a lot to me too. The quilt program counted and calculated it. Without the two borders I added, it takes 2 1/8 yards of that fabric.

I don't want anyone to spend a fortune on it -- especially for something you haven't seen. I know you've all got projects you want to invest in.

I'm going to make it up as a mystery quilt anyway, post the clues and pics and you can all watch, and if you like it, you've got the pattern and the the yardages and can join in. It'll still be fun.

:D

marieg 07-17-2008 07:13 PM

I think what is confusing is the blue you say 4.25 and the green 5.5 yds??? Is it at all possible to list the yardages with the fabric and not under the pictures. I really want to do this but am so confused by all the pics of fabric. If the big amount of yardage is for border you could tell us how much if we don't use that fabric for border?

Cordelia 07-17-2008 07:18 PM

I'll list the yardages again in a list. I'll do that tomorrow night some time. I have an early job tomorrow and then I'll be sewing all afternoon and will be back on line tomorrow night.

bebe 07-17-2008 07:35 PM

If you think the cost is to hight then just make a small wall hanging or table runner with the same idea you had.

You could also do mystery blocks each month in scrappy fabrics.

Cordelia 07-18-2008 06:37 AM

There's a reason the blue fabric is more than the green fabric and that's because I use red and greens in the traditional and really only use a bunch of blues and silvers in the winter one.

I'll put together a comprehensive list with the yardages for you. I'll post it soon.

Bebe had a good idea.

Cordelia 07-19-2008 05:07 AM

Yardages:

Outdoors Winter Version:

1) 1/8 Yard med/light brown.

2) 1 Yard medium blue snowflake pattern. (ex. Hoffman's Snowflake Escape/Sky Blue/Silver Metallic.)

3) 1/2 Yard medium blue (ex. Hoffman's Venetian Holiday - Dainty Poinsettias - Chambray Blue/Pearl.)

4) 1/3 Yard dark blue snowflake pattern (ex. Hoffman's Weekend in the Woods - Snowflake Rapture - Cobalt/Silver.)

5) 3/8 Yard medium to dark blue (ex. Hoffman's Winter Radiance - Reindeer Stroll - French Blue/Silver.)

6) 1/3 Yard dark blue snowflake blue (ex. Pom Pom Penguines by Bonijean for South Seas Fabrics.)

7) 1/4 Yard dark blue snowflake pattern (ex. In the Beginning's Jason Yenter Wintergraphix.)

8 ) 1/3 Yard light blue snowflake pattern (ex. Hoffman's Weekend in the Woods - Snowflake Rapture - Powder Blue/Pearlized.)

9) 1/4 Yard light blue to silver (ex. Hoffman's Weekend in the Woods - Star Filigree.)

10) 1 Yard light blue star fabric (ex. Hoffman's Weekend in the Woods - Twinkling Skies - French Blue/Silver.)

11) 3/8 Yard light to medium silver star fabric (ex. Hoffman's Weekend in the Woods - Twinkling Skies, pewter/grey/silver.)

12) 3/8 Yard dark blue winter themed fabric (ex. Hoffman's Winter Radiance - Reindeer Stroll - Midnight Blue/Silver.)

13) 5 1/2 Yards dark blue star themed fabric (ex. Hoffman's Weekend in the Woods - Twinkling Skies - Cobalt/Silver.)

There is going to be an optional applique part that will also require medium to dark blue. It should be a water color or textured fabric rather than print. You'll need roughly 1/2 yard if you choose to make it. It should be strictly blue with no green or purple tints. (We can also mix and match the left overs from the other blues in the list rather than introduce another fabric. That's the goal.)

You'll need a tiny bit of your white fabric (less than a fat quarter) for it.

Cordelia 07-19-2008 05:25 AM

For Traditional:

1) 1/8 Yard light/med brown.

2) 1/2 Yard light/med beige. (ex. Hoffman's Venetian Holiday - Dainty Poinsettias - Champagne/Gold.)

3) 1/2 Yard light beige (ex. Hoffman's Venetian Holiday - Holiday Damasks - Beige/Gold.)

4) 7/8 Yard medium warm gold (ex. Hoffman's Venetian Holiday - Dainty Poinsettias - Buttercreme/Pearl.)

5) 1/4 Yard light beige (ex. Hoffman's Venetian Holiday - Romantic Leaf Motif - Buttercreme/Pearl.)

6) 5/8 Yard light beige (ex. Hoffman's All the Trimmings - Holiday Garden Curls - Sand/Pearl.)

7) 1/2 Yard medium beige (ex. Hoffman's All the Trimmings - Holiday Garden Curls - Latte/Gold.)

8 ) 1/4 Yard dark warm gold (ex. Robert Kaufman's Creamsicle from Judy Hand's Fusions.)

9) 1/8 Yard dark red/wine (ex. Hoffman's All the Trimmings - Holiday Garden Curls - Dark Red/Gold.)

10) 1/4 Yard bright dark red snowflake pattern (ex. South Seas Pom Pom Penguins by Bonijean. Cinnimon.)

11) 1/4 Yard dark red ivy floral pattern (ex. Hoffman's Venetian Holiday - Italian Holly - Scarlet Red/Gold.)

12) 3/8 Yard dark multicolored red/green/black Christmas themed print or floral (ex. Jason Yenter's Wintergraphix from In the Beginning. Red/Green.)

13) 4 1/4 Yards of dark green star pattern (ex. Hoffman's Weekend in the Woods - Twinkling Skies - Hunter Green/Gold.)

The applique portion is optional and will reguire med/dark green. Should be a water color or textured green with no blue tints. About 1/2 yard or so.

Cordelia 07-19-2008 05:51 AM

When everyone has gone through their fabrics and selected their 13 fabrics, it will be important to follow the guidelines to keep with the yardages.

There's a good bit of paper piecing in this design to keep in mind. I tend to be wasteful when I paper piece.

I'm strictly using the example fabrics I posted for the clues. If you substitute them, make sure you treat the substitute fabric as if it's the actual fabric option I posted to keep the yardages accurate.

That just means when you see me use the Jason Yenter Wintergraphix sample, use the fabric you substituted for it and you don't use one of the other substitutes or the yardages will be affected.

When everybody has gone through their fabric stash and made their selections, let me know and I'll post the first clue. Just let me know when you're all ready.

I'll be back on line late tonight.
