I have always loved the concept of a mystery quilt. My first, and only one so far, was by Debbie Caffey called Guilty as Charged. I was pleased with my colors and that was it. It was themost difficult thing I've ever done and turned into my first UFO.

I still like the idea of them. I found a couple online that were table runners that I want to try. The hardest thing for me was all the flying geese units in mine because all the triangles were cut before pieced. I like making mine with squares and rectangles as it's just easier to do it that way. I think I want to get better at piecing and become more an intermediate quilter instead of a beginner before I try another one.

Maybe, if I see that things will be flying geese units, I can make them differently instead of the hard way. I don't know.

Most of the ones I've seen are beautiful. I kept all the pattern pieces and hope to try again on it someday.

I'm doing one right now, and it has been a LOT of work. I'm not sure I'm going to be happy with it when it's finished. Furthermore, my husband and I are taking an extended trip this winter, and so I'll miss the last installment of instructions until I get back. It was a contest, and so I'll finish the quilt, but miss the end of the contest.

I have participated in mystery quilts. I love them. I do have a hard time picking fabric though. If you do it through a quilt shop or online if you ask for advise on the type of fabric to pick - they are usually really good helping you out- because they know the final product.

steelervic 10-22-2010 10:14 AM

I have done several, one I liked the others I didn't! The one I liked was a Debbie Caffrey one, it was well-written with lots of good info about fabric choices. The colors did not go together well on the other one. I have no desire to do another mystery quilt, but if I did, I would make sure it was a Debbie Caffrey one!

vburr 10-22-2010 11:43 AM

I did one at a quilting retreat and hated every minute of it beginning with selecting the fabric. I am a visual person and have to see the end product to make it work. Not my "cup of tea"

Take a chance. You may be pleasantly surprised. One Guild I am a member of has Mystery Quilt sew days where we are given fabric requirements and cutting directions ahead of time and meet to do the sewing, step by step, and have a pot luck luncheon. I usually have to rest up the next day from all the laughing and joking we do.

starstruck 10-22-2010 02:12 PM

I have done two mystery quilts. The first one through a quilt store and i was very happy with the results. The second through a member of our guild and not too impressed. Probably not much help, huh.

Just finished a mystery quilt off of quiltville.com and I love it, but I started it after it was revealed. I wish I would have made it a little smaller, because it is huge!!! She is doing another one starting on November 1st, but again, I am going to wait until it is revealed, because she makes nothing smaller than a queen, and I don't really want to make another queen sized quilt

jitkaau 10-22-2010 04:25 PM

I like to know what the thing is going to look like before I start it. Materials are too expensive in Australia to take pot - luck.

I have made a couple mystery quilts. Infact I will be doing antoher one in January. I enjoy them as you don't know what the quilt will look like until the class is almost over. Its always fun to see what everyone has picked out for their fabrics and how it goes togeather.

Do one you will have fun and if you don't like it you can always give it away.

Never been happy with my fabric placement on any mystery quilt. I think I'm way too much of a Virgo control freak.

smitty 10-22-2010 05:30 PM

I go for the socializing. only plan on making the smallest size the teacher offers. then it can go to Q4K or something like that. have to admit that I usually do not like the results, but have fun anyway. I rarely buy all new fabric.

butterflywing 10-22-2010 05:34 PM

i've done 2, and i don't think i would again without doing what i do now. i save all the instructions as they come along. then if i like what the ending is, i make the quilt as i would any other.

the 2 i did i was sorry i spent the money on. the end product was disappointing.

so i guess the answer is, yes, i did them. no, i wouldn't again.

I am now doing another one that just started two weeks ago and I am not sure I will like the end result, but, again, it is fun.

I like how you are given only bits and pieces to work on at a time because they are very easy to finish and I really have a sense of accomplishment each week.

The one I am doing now is a Christmas Quilt / wallhanging here:

http://erikhomemade.typepad.com/

I also liked the ones I did because I only used scraps. There was no monetary outlay for fabrics or anything. So, even though it isn't my favorite, it's ok because I didn't spend any money on it and I enjoyed the process.

I did Eric's last mystery and really enjoyed - so am now starting his Christmas one calling it "BAH Humbug" as it is not Christmas colors! I used to always peek at the finished mystery afraid to choose my colors without looking. Now it is really fun not to know the outcome and truthfully the colors will be work no matter what you pick! I'm also starting Connect the Dots from Judy Laquidara http://www.patchworktimes.com

I'm not usually a person to take risks, but for some reason i like mystery quilts. A friend offers a class every yr in March. She has two days of classes with about 25 or so people each day. They make the same quilt each day. They go from 8:30 to 8:30. There are snacks for breakfast, a full lunch and a full dinner. Her husband and mine cook the meals and do dishes. We just sew like beavers, get up eat and go back to sewing. Around 5 pm., we get to see what the finished quilt will be. Everyone's quilt looks totally different and is so much fun. I think I have done this about 9 yrs now and I only disliked one of them, but it was too much of one of the fabrics that wasn't my favorite. The same friend has taught mystery quilts at the Road to CA show and will do so again this Jan. I am signed up. I have also done a couple online where they give you instructions through out the day for you to follow along. It is always a big surprise and I love surprises. Go for it and see if you like it.

I have done several mystery quilts. The secret to a great mystery quilt is contrast between your fabrics. The last 2 are the same pattern done in different colors/fabrics.

I've only done two mystery quilts but had some of the same reservations many others did. What enticed me to try it is that there was a kit of fabrics for the quilt and I LOVED them and knew I could also add a few from my stash to really make it mine so it didn't matter to me what the pattern was. As it turned out I loved it. It did have a lot of flying geese and 1/2 square triangles in it so I even learned some different techniques in the session. I think it might have been on Super Bowl Sunday and there was food too so it was fun. My other mystery quilt was from the internet...I cheated...I looked at the finished product and loved the design so picked fabrics from my stash for it.

Rusty's Mama 10-22-2010 06:50 PM

I think mystery quilts are fun and if you don't like the quilt there is always someone out there somewhere that will love it!

CLMQuilter 10-22-2010 07:06 PM

I love mystery quilts and have done a lot of them.I have been happy with the results.

bjdemir 10-22-2010 09:00 PM

I am just finish up my second one. Loved the first from the get go (because of the colors). It is mine!!! The one I am finishing is for my DD and DSL. Wasn't sure about all the colors, but now that is is almost finished it is really looking good. Everyone that has seen it just loves the colors. I really do like the pattern - it has 3 distinct patterns - you could make 3 different sided quilts out it. The colors where partially chosen by me, with a lot of help from the quilt shop. She really knows her color combinations and very willing to work with you. I think that may be part of the success of a mystery quilt.

Do you have a photo?

Lee Benedict 10-23-2010 05:16 AM

We did one as a quilt club project, it was fun to see all the
different results due to the different fabrics used.

skjack 10-23-2010 07:41 AM

I like to do mystery quilts also pick from same fabric collection most of the time but once in a while it is good to use from your stash. Bonnie Hunter's mysteries are great and Billie Lauder's are so much fun. great to do with guild or friends. stretches you horizon don't like it give it to charity and you still learned something.

zyxquilts 10-23-2010 07:47 AM

I've done a few mystery quilts & have had fun doing them all :D I just figure that if it ends up being something I dont like, I can always use it as a philanthropy quilt for my guild.
This top that I sent to Jan in VA for the barracks project was a mystery http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-63082-5.htm

I've read all five pages on this subject and one of the problems that is repeated often is the inability to choose fabrics when the quilt pattern is unknown. I've taught several Mystery Classes and discovered the students who were happy with their quilt (no matter the pattern) made holiday quilts (Christmas or Easter or Patriotic fabrics) or seasonal quilts (Autumn or Spring fabrics). Perhaps this may work for others. Belles

See, I'm like that too, so I'm afraid I'd have a hard time keeping going if I don't know if I love the final product or not.

Of course, I also like surprises, which is what makes the idea of mystery quilts intriguing.

I was thinking my MIL and I might do a couple together for charity quilts, since we get together and sew once a week or so.

I think it's marvelous that you and your MIL sew together regularly, regardless of what you make.

My late MIL and I got together weekly too. We both belonged to the same club. We got together an additional day out of the week to craft, drive around whatever. Time, just the 2 of us. Course, during the summer I had all my kids too, so just the 5 of us. I was so happy to have that time. When my dear MIL passed away suddenly, I became eternally grateful for the time we spent together. It was high in quality and quantity.

:D A mystery quilt is one that you don't know what the pattern is or what the final quilt will look like until you actually sew it together. Most mystery quilt programs give you the directions in parts - the first one you may get ahead of time, telling you the fabric requirements (3/4 yard fabric A, 1 yard focus fabric, etc., and to get a dark, light & medium in small & medium prints) and sometimes it will also tell you the first cutting directions. Depending on the program, you'll get the next set of directions when the class starts or if it's online, it could be weekly. I've done 2 online, one day mysteries & we were emailed the next set of directions at intervals thru' out the day. I've also done 2 at the Road to California quilt show, & each time we finished a set of directions, we got the next set.
Some times you might guess what your quilt will look like before you get ALL the way to the last set of directions, but for the most part, you're just sewing squares & rectangles & triangles together, then sewing units together, and so on. I think it's a lot of fun! :D
Hope that sort of gives you the idea!

wildyard 10-25-2010 07:14 AM

A bunch of us here on the board did a mystery row of the month together.. are doing... and it has been such fun. I love sharing the fun with others and seeing what we each come up with. I'd do it again in a flash!!

I have done several mystery quilts when I go to Sisters Oregon to the Quilters Affair which is connected tot he outdoor quilt show in July. Anyway, I think if you pick the colors you like, then you will be happy with the quilt. I have liked all mine and a couple of them I made specifically for gifts.

I love doing mystery quilts. I was very apprehensive with the first one, not knowing if the colors would go. But, it really helps me get out of my little box. I've really liked the ones I have done They have been mostly done in class, so I was able to ask questions of the teacher and show her fabrics that she would be able tell me if they would work or not. I currently doing one and with mystery quilts I tend to use from my stash so I don't put out a lot of money on something I may not like. For this one,I have decided to do a scrappy quilt. Boy is that ever out of my comfort zone. As I started, it was very difficult for me to invision liking it. However, now that I am close to finished, I am very pleasantly surprised. I actually like it. Lots of different fabrics but it looks pretty good.

OUR QUILT CLUB DID A MYSTERY QULT AT A RETREAT A FEW YEARS AGO. PATTERN CAME FROM A MAGAZINE. EVERYONE FOLLOWED INSTRUCTIONS TO A "T". iT WAS A DISASTER FOR EVERY ONE! iT IS STILL REFERRED TO AS" THE QULT FROM HELL." jANE

bels 10-27-2010 09:41 PM

Absolutely do NOT like mystery quilts. I have enough problems trying to pick out a pattern I can live with. Just need to know what I'm working for.
