Hi, I saw a really neat swirl or twirl quilt block that I would like to try, but I can't find a template for it or what it's called. It looks like a peppermint swirl. Kind of like a swirled Dresden Plate. The spokes have a curve to the sides instead of straight. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Kind of like the peppermints in the photo here but with more spokes.

and this with less spokes.

I'll help you look, this looks interesting.

the first one has been deleted and the second one is really cute. Could you combine 2 spokes into one?

I'll keep looking but I've tried peppermint, swirl, red and white, christmas, etc. words in my searches.

Ok here's something really close to what I'm talking about. Scroll down about halfway.

I think what you're looking for is called something like spicy spiral, I believe it uses a 9 degree ruler, if you put spicy spiral in the search box, you should get some pictures and see if it's what you're looking for.

Ok, looking at that one I think I could draft a pattern for you. I'm from the old school, when I started quilting there were not the resources there are now!LOL!

How many spokes do you want and how big a block? I'll put pencil to graph paper and see what I come up with. No charge ( ) and you can use it or not use it.

The Patsy Thompson quilt looks like the "leaves" are just over-lapped more than you do with a Dresden Plate. Could you just play around doing that? Not exactly sure what you're wanting to do with it. I think hers is cute. Would be a nice little girly quilt.

Oh that would be great! Thank you! I'm not sure how many spokes. 12 I guess. Isn't that the "norm" for a dresden plate. I'm still rather new at this.

No, the spicy spiral isn't it. But thanks for the heads up on the very interesting pattern!

Just let us know what you do and send a picture. I need to do a girly quilt and may do that. It makes it a fun pattern. Have fun!!

Can't wait to see what you come up with. I tried printing the picture and then enlarging it so I could perhaps cut out one of the spokes, but my printer won't enlarge :(

Wow - wonderful drafting. You are good! I've printed it, will enlarge it and make a template.

Holy cow wow! Yes! Thank you!!

So now, I've cut out a few spokes...this will be harder than I thought. I can't figure out how to line them up to sew them together LOL Another challenge to solve!

dakotamaid 02-22-2011 11:16 AM

Use a master layout and a light box if you are going to applique. If you are going to piece be sure and mark your seam lines on both sides so you know where to line them up.

Thanks I'll try that
