Does anyone know the name of this block? Thanks.

jenOSU 07-05-2015 06:19 PM

No, but I like its movement.

That is awesome :)

It's almost a quatrefoil, except for those outer triangles. I'll look around a bit--let us know if you find out the name.

can't help. but I like it

I am sure that you will find it on Quilters Cache.

Nice block.......pls let us all know when you find out.

I haven't reinstalled Blockbase on my newer computer yet. I know I have seen the center block called Weathervane but it doesn't have the triangles in the corner.

I don't know the name, but I can see where you could save some time on construction by using a red square and adding a couple of quick corners...mind you, this comes from someone who does not like making flying geese. :o)

According to Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns it is a weathervane variation. #1780, it gives McKim as a reference. Although, now I see the one in the book has a slight difference to this one. This one has the corner block with the longer points of the triangles touching in the center, while the one in the book has the short ends touching in the center (which make it look like "birds") and the square nearest the center is the same fabric as the center. Anyway, I vote for weathervane.

thank you, yng

My thoughts exactly! Snowballing the red squares would make quick work of this block!

Paper piecing the corner blocks would work as well. Will try the block out in EQ7.

I am still searching, such a beautiful block needs its own name?

Jenny Doan calls it Quatrefoil in the new issue of Block magazine, but her corners are 4 patches. Also her "petals" are made by snowballing the top two corners. That wastes a little more fabric, but it looks nicer.

I have a book, which I cannot find at the moment, that is based on the component parts of this block. Creative Grids has a Cats Cradle ruler and a video for making the corner triangle blocks from rectangles and squares. This is much easier and more accurate than piecing individual triangles to the squares. The book was published by Atkinson Designs but it apparently out of print.

Also looks like a variation of Prairie Flower.

#1piecemaker 07-07-2015 07:00 AM

It looks like a version of the Churn Dash block to me!

Love this block, whatever it is called. I do have a comment, though. When using striped fabric, I would make the striped fabric piece 4.5 by 4.5 and attach triangles to the corners. This will keep a nice flow for the stripes.

I can't help you with the name but I sure like it. I am not sure if it is the block or choice of fabrics that give it movement. I think maybe the fabric ...
I will watch this thread for your answer. Thank you for sharing.

I don't know the name, but I really like it.
