Name of Fabric under appliques/ embroidery??
 

I am having a brain freeze tonight. I am making up a shopping list to head to Niagara Falls NY next week, and I want to go to a Quilt Store or JoAnns.

I purchased a laser cut applique of a horse, and I will be applying it to a large piece of background. The lady in the store suggested I use ??? something to put behind it as I am going to zig zag stitch the large applique onto the background. For the life of me, I can't remember the name of the backing behind the background for this? is it called Stabilizer? and can I purchase it in JoAnns?

I am going over Black Friday and Sat and Sunday for a hockey tournament with DS and my mom. Will any Quilt stores be open? Is this something I can find in JoAnns? and is it worth going over and shopping on Sat which is the only day besides Sunday morning when I will have time to shop?

might she have suggested wonder under? but any lightweight fusible will work. i personally think wonder under is too thick/heavy. i can't recall the brand i bought... i just asked the clerk for a very lightweight.

I use steam a seam light also.

If it is laser cut it probably already has heat and bond fusible attached as many do so you will not want to buy a fusible but you can use tear away stabilizer if you plan to satin stitch. I have used sulky iron on tear away with no problem.

Typically when I do some types of applique I use a fusible ( heat and Bond, wonder under, steam a seam) but behinf the base fabric I use a tear a way stabilizer. The one I use tons of is a pellon product called "stitch and tear" . JoAnns has it and its on a bolt with all the interfacings .. some Joanns have the interfacings behind the cutting counter. And yes quilt shops will be open Friday , Saturday and most open after 12 noon on Sunday. You can search on line for shops.. and call and confirm the hours... and check many run some kind of sale over the holiday weekend.
If you go to JoAnns get the coupons and the flyer before you shop. Go on line .. and use the US zip code or city for the flyer in the area you will be going.

thanks, Stabilizer is what I think she said. She mentioned that it would help not pucker the fabric while I secure and zig zag the laser cut horse onto the background.
