What do they call this pattern?

I honestly don't know if it has a real name. These are just half square triangle blocks laid in a diamond pattern.

EasyPeezy 09-13-2012 06:41 PM

Depression or Barn raising. Not sure.

I'm not sure it has a particular name, but is made from Half Square Triangles (HSQ). Check out this site for more info:

One of the board members just did a tutorial on this. . . http://www.quiltingboard.com/tutoria...s-t200315.html

If it were log cabin blocks, it would be barn raising. I assume the same for the HST.

I think it's the layout that's called barn raising.

I do not know the name but the pattern is beautiful. Hope you are able to find it.

Peckish 09-13-2012 08:34 PM

I don't think the quilt itself has an official name. It's simply HSTs arranged in a "barn raising" layout.

Here's the original post if you'd like to read what the quilter said about it.

Thanks for your help. What I'm trying to do is figure out how much of each color fabric to buy. If I'm making a queen at 90 x 100, with ten inch blocks and using four colors alternating, would 2 yards of each color be enough?

Ok first of all, with those dimensions your quilt will be off center. I personally wouldn't have any problem with that, but just thought I'd point that out.

I drew it up in EQ. Per the fabric requirements printed for this quilt, the purple would require 4 5/8 yards (assuming 40" wide fabric), which you then divide by 4 because you want to use 4 colors. EQ is notorious for over-estimating yardage, but I always figure it's better to go over than under. If I were making this quilt, I'd get 1.25 yards of each color.

p.s. Here's a pic of a very similar quilt (LOVE this one!) and it's off center. Just to show you it can be done very nicely.

I get 4.583 yds for the white and 1.222 yds for each color doing it with pure math, so EQ didn't add much at all, Peckish. Personally, I'd bump them both up a bit. There's a lot 'left over', too bad it's too narrow.

I like the quilt, colors and pattern. I don't care for the off center one in the link, it would drive me crazy (not far to drive). Just my taste. I always buy more, scraps are great.

I used EQ7, maybe they tweaked the formula with this release to make it more accurate! Yay!

Oh, thank you so much ladies. This quilt is for my niece and she actually wants it very off center. She is a graphic designer and loves modern quilts. She wants it in all greys with a very strong contrast. Her mom is going to have it quilted as a Christmas present. I'll post pics as soon as it's done.

I found another pretty one done in fall colors. It's a free pattern from rjrfabrics.com but only 56x70 in size
