I name all of mine and take pictures for me and the recipient. Just think if the quilts that were made years ago had this documentation to go along with them. It gives more meaning to the quilt. The entire time I'm making the quilt I'm mulling over ideas in my head. Every once in awhile I'll post a pic here, these gals can come up with some great suggestions!

I always name my quilts. Well, actually that's not quite what I meant to say. My quilts seem to name themselves. It might be part of the name of the pattern ("Andy's Lasagna") or the fabric line "By Water's Edge") or circumstances of quilt ("Leftover Blues") or something pertaining to the recipient ("Cara's Coffee"). If you're having trouble, ask on the board. Everyone seems really willing to help & the names I've seen them come up with have been good.

I don't name my quilts either. I just call it "Log Cabin Scrappy" or Grandmother's Flower Garden.....whatever the pattern is, that's it's name. Or really original: Alex's graduation quilt. However I did start naming my vehicles: my mazda miata (MM) is called Marilyn and our Montana Mountaineer (MM) is called Norma Jean (all after Marilyn Monroe). Alas, the truck is called "the truck". Good Luck with your names.
As for quilts, being a newbie at quilting I have only completed 2 quilts and am working on a 3rd. Just finished the 2nd one so haven't named it yet. Still thinking on it. |

Yes but my response was not to the OP but to AZ Jane who didn't understand why some of us even name quilts. I was trying to offer a reason as to WHY we would name quilts and naming goes hand in hand with labeling IMHO. why bother to name if you aren't going to put an identifying label on?
Regarding the confusion to future generations this could be a very possible reason why so many of the old quiltblocks we know are known by 3 or 4 different names. |

Never thought of naming my quilts, just my sewing machines. Some quilts were a bear to finish, if I named them I don't think I would be kind. I gift my quilts, so they are called "Bon's new house quilt", Bizzie's graduation quilt. I am just doing the first one that I will keep, I call it the farmer's wife. Great idea though!!!

Why? It's a quilt. The sky is the limit. You had to have some idea as to why you made a particular pattern or used a color. How does it make you feel. No fear here! Name it what you like about it or what it reminds you of. Make it fun.
peace EDIT: As for AZ Jane, You will find naming them will be a lot of fun if you start doing it. it is like naming a work of art. |
Interesting - never thought about naming them. That could be fun - Imagine giving a quilt with a little card that gives the care and love for quilt with a name.

I name them because they are my "art". Last month my BIL and SIL were here and looking at a top I had just completed for their daughter for graduation. They asked, "Does it have a name? Are you making a label like the others?"
I told them I was considering it and they told me I "had" to because everyone loved that part. They like seeing the name and figuring out why I gave it that name. My labels have the quilt name, for , by Mary, occasion, year. Btw, our cars have names including the trucks. My favorite name is Uncle Jesse. It is a 1968 F150. My kids thought it looked just like Uncle Jesse's on Dukes of Hazard. |
