I have made a medium-sized wall hanging made up of 12 squares. I want to put a button in the center of each square, but should I put the button on first, then the batting and backing, or should I do the finishing, then put on the buttons last of all? I haven't done anything with embellishments before, and I'm not sure about it. :?:

i vote for last. so they won't get in the way while you quilt.

Sounds like you want to emphasis the buttons. Therefore , quilt first and the embellish away with the buttons. It is easier that way. :-)

I sewed the buttons on last after the quilting. On one quilt I took shallow stitches so the threads didn't go through the whole quilt. On the other quilt I poked that needle all the way through so you could see the tacks on the back. It worked out fine either way.
My sister says never put them on a quilt you're going to wrap up in. I decorated her quilt with buttons and she said they were very, very hard to sit on! I didn't do it on purpose, really!  |
uh huh. sure you didn't.
 |
Yep! That's what Marcella say too!
 |
I say buttons last also if you sew the through extra way to help hold batting.

after, adds to the quilt look. Before is more for design look. Your choice.
