I need advice on how and what to add for borders on this quilt. It is my efforts at making a "memory quilt" for my nostalgic daughter. It is made with fabrics from grandparents clothing, plus pictures of her children, etc. It measures 101 inches square now and needs to fit a king size bed. I appreciate any advice as to the size of the borders, plus colors. It is also my first attempt at QAYG.

I would add the narrow grey all the way around and make an even piano key border from all of the farics in the quilt. It is very pretty.

I think I would use the sashing fabric for the borders. Maybe the red from the back as part of the border or binding.
Very Beautiful.

I agree-use the gray. That is a beautiful quilt.

Would for sure finish of the blocking with gray strip.

My chart says a king is 100 x 92 so yours should be large enough!!

Just a suggestion - since its a memory quilt use an old fashion prarie point edging on it with all the fabric you have in the quilt!!

Just to let you know-It was very creative of you to put pictures as centers in the dresdans. You have done a great job - It looks great and will be a treasured item to be passed through generations!! I suggest that you write in the white squares on back who the people are and maybe a date. Also add details about the fabric being from grandmas clothes. Be sure to include your name. This will help as the piece is passed down from generation to generation!!! Again Fantastic job!!! :-D

I would put a 3" gray border that looks good with both the front and back. Would also bind with gray. Beautiful job by the way! :)

I agree with several others to use the narrow grey all the way around the entire quilt. I like the idea of an even piano key border using all of the fabrics used in the quilt in a random order. I would use the red for the back of the keyboard area.

I would make the piano border at least 1/2 tp 3/4 the width of what your squares are if not the same length.

I would measure the bed checking to see how high the bed sits off the floor. You can make the quilt larger if you want it to hang down the sides of your bed.

You have a wonderful quilt and a precious memory keepsake for your family.

Thanks so much for sharing with us. Keep us updated on the progress of your quilt.

it is gorgeous!!!

?? make the piano keys loop all the way around, front to back?, so 5" would be 10", 4" would be 8". Maybe even 6". Batted, with corners in grey, mitered. I'd foundation the keys with an old sheet for strength.

I self bound to the front 8" on a queensized quilt once, double batted the whole quilt (before they made double bat) the edges are poofy & fun. I'm pretty sure I made it envelope style, wrong side out finished & turned it in & slip stitched the opening closed. That won't work on this one if you have quilted the quilt. Then, I tied it.

If you do the piano keys all the way around, I'd attach it to the back, miter the front corners, turn under the front edge & stitch close to the edge, scant 1/8". The bobbin side, it will be smoother if you are stitching as close to the ditch as possible, on the quilt side rather than the border side.

Mitering isn't too scary. Pin around the seam allowance, bring the corner into position, pinning down the point. Bring the left & right sides together at the point. You can leave it open, or slip stich it closed.
