if you prewash the back, but did not prewash the fabrics you used for the top your shrinkage once it is done is going to be a little different on the top and the back - and could distort it a bit once it has been quilted and washed. For a small child's quilt it may not be a big deal.

The only way I can remember it is "R" comes before "S" so use Retayne to prewash and Synthropol afterwards on a finished quilt.
