Hi all,
I am in the process of piecing a quilt for my uncle who is a disabled vet. He gets quite cold at night. I'm not sure who will wash the quilt - the home or me- but have enough Marine fabric to make two to trade off, if necessary. What kind of batting would you suggest that I use? I am making the quick strippie quilt from www.maryquilts.com and plan to do some simple quilting on my Janome to keep it all together. Your advice is appreciated! lots2do (and trying to get some of it done today) :) |
I would use Warm-n-Natural (or Warm-n-White) ~ I use that as my main "staple" and it is very warm :)

same here warm and natural it also holds together better during washings.

If the home washes it it will be washed in HOT water, so make sure everything you use in it can be washed in HOT water. Good idea to make one to wash and one to use if you do the washing.

Also be sure to put his name on it with permanent ink. Don't know about the VA, but sadly some things 'disappear' in some nursing homes.

Thanks, everyone!

Agreed - my suggestion also.

'Funny you should ask: I made one or my uncle. He was a retired Marine. He lived in the VA home at Hanson, KY. Wonderful place! The quilt was made in vibrant blues that just matched his eyes. In fact, that's how I selected the colors. He proudly displayed it as his top cover. Unfortunately, due to the need for many washings, the color faded to greys. I know they have touse harsh detergents and bleach because of sanitation issues. The qwuilt is still intact, but faded. His daughter has it. I used 100% LQS cotton, Warm and Natural and machine quilted it.

I was just going to say the same thing. Put his name on BOTH THE BACK AND THE FRONT of the quilts. And yes, sometimes even the other patients do the stealing. The one my DH was in for so long had a mentally off woman who went around in her wheel chair, searching through other rooms to see what she could lift from drawers. The aids said they checked out her own drawers every week to remove anything that didn't belong to her, and replace them where they belonged. You could tell when she had been "shopping" because she had a lump under her chair robe!! It got to be rather funny after a while. |
