Need advice on this "watercolor" quilt
1 Attachment(s)
This is my first watercolor quilt. Well, actually, my second attempt, but the first was regulated to "file 13". It is 2" squares, unsewn. Bunny and raccoon are painted on separate fabric to be appliquéd after sewing the background together, if I get that far! I was attempting to make it look like the sun is shining on my critters. Do I need to reverse my light and dark yellows? Should the yellows be eliminated altogether? This is the first quilt new quilters should make. I have learned so much about color value with this project. Still, lots more to learn. All suggestions will be appreciated.

I think the yellow is like a shaft of sunlight breaking through to the forest floor. I like it just as it is. It's gonna be beautiful!

It is giving the effect you are wanting. My only suggestion would be to look at pics w/ light beams like your doing, the white is the "hottest" or most central light beam. I agree w/ your idea of switching to make more white squares in the center of the "beam" And it is adorable!

Absolutely stunning! I think it is beautiful exactly like it is! I wouldn't swap the yellows either. I Googled pictures of rays of sunshine and it seems the yellows can be seen both ways i.e. more intense on the edges or more intense in the middle so either way would work but I love it as it is. What a beautiful sense of peace and companionship I get from looking at these three little friends huddled together in a sunbeam having fun! Love it! Love it!
P.s. one of the reasons I like the yellow in the center is the way it interacts with the characters with the 'warmth' of the sun actually shining directly onto them instead of a cooler center of whites. I think you have a good mix as the yellow is not too solid either. |
It is fabulous. I would not change a thing.....just finish her up....It is adorable.
Just like you took this pic, I would switch them around several dif ways and take pics. Don't look at the pics for a day, then put all the pics side by side and see which one suits you. Personally I would like to see the yellows more in the middle going down from dark to like, JMHO.

I think you've done an excellent job! Watercolor quilts can be quite challenging and I think you've hit the nail on the head with this one.
I love it just like you have it.
I also like the yellow. Wonderful start! Please post the finished project.
Leave it the way it is, more natural looking, as if there was a bit of "dust" refracting the sunbeam.
My first time to see this type of quilt. It is absolutely beautiful. Good job.

I think you've done a wonderful job with this! I would try concentrating the yellows at the top and fading down, and see how that looks.
Very pretty and I think the yellow looks great where it is. I agree-it looks like a stream of sunshine showing through to the critters.
just love it, so cute! if you wanted more yellow in places you could quilt with different shades of yellow thread? but having said that i love it just the way it is.

I can't give you advice. Your project is fantastic!!! I do like the idea of taking the pictures and looking at them after a day or so and comparing the effects. It is going to be beautiful.
I like the yellow and white the way they are. The whole top is so peaceful and restful. It's going to be a beautiful quilt!
It is perfect just the way it is and your bunnies are adorable as well as a great addition.
I think it is absolutely charming. I like the placement of most of the yellow and white. The only area I might move around is a few of the yellow and white squares right above the critters. I might group the yellows to be more in a line shining down on the animals with the whites on each side. And, a first thought when I saw it was the idea of adding a butterfly or two floating about two-thirds the way up in the sunshine. But, lovely, lovely work.

I think it is beautiful. Great job!
It looks gorgeous to me..I've always wanted to make one of those quilts but lacked the patience to get started with it. The little "critters" are such a sweet touch!!
I think it is perfect and will be gorgeous When it is finished.

I also like the yellow just as it is. Your quilt is going to be stupendous - can't wait to see the finished project!

I think it is beautiful as is.

Just perfect!
Leave the yellows. They look like rays from the sun. It's adorable!

Do you know how lucky you are to have a quilt wall? Over the years I have quilted I have realised my biggest mistakes come from not being able to step back to see the whole thing before I begin to piece.
To me you have done it perfectly!!!
This is a beautiful piece, and the critter friends are the perfect focal point. I think your sunbeam in well placed, but I would try taking the yellow all the way to the ground.
For example, try putting one directly behind the bunny's tail, one behind the raccoon's cap on the right, and a third one diagonal to that one. Wherever an artist wants the viewer's focus to go, the brightest light should go. Play with that idea and see if it makes a difference. |
Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. I have continued to play with the placement of my yellows, and taking pictures. I think I am finally satisfied. I'm going on vacation for a week then I will finish this when I get home and post pictures. Thanks again for all the encouragement and help! What a great group of folks on here!!!
