Need alternative marking item
 

Looking for something else to mark my quilting pattern onto my quilt besides disappearing ink pens, and water soluble pencils. Chalk won't work (would rub off when loaded on frame) and these pencil leads are breaking as fast as I can sharpen them. The disappearing ink doesn't show up. I would like to use something that I could dampen to remove ( bar soap won't show up either).

I'm experimenting with transfer paper, the kind I used for marking darts in sewing class. (Am I dating myself?) I recently bought some and marked all three colors (yellow, red and blue) on a piece of fabric, then washed it. They all came out. It works like the old carbon paper, you trace over it. I've tried just about everything for marking on dark fabrics and, like you, it rubs off before I'm finished quilting.

I got a box of tailor's chalk one time in a box of sewing notions. I love it for marking! The chalk is removed by the heat of an iron and doesn't brush off easily. http://www.wawak.com/products/produc...FStk7AodV3IAFg

Not sure if it would work for you but I use a plain old #2 lead mechanical pencil for light fabrics and the same type Bohin pencil with white lead for dark fabrics. No sharpening needed (and I agree those points just don't hold up). Only one time when I was very heavy-handed on a white fabric have I had issues with the regular pencil lead (and I eventually got that out as well - just took a bit more persuasion).

Try water soluble stabilizer. It's turned out to be my preferred method of marking. Never again will you have to test anything or worry about removing marks. I buy it by the bolt from Jo-Ann's with a coupon. Love this stuff!

I have used Crayola Washable Markers with the fine point for marking. One item I marked and then didn't get back to quilting it until 6 months later. It all came out in the wash. BTW the marker was blue on a white background.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I did get the marking chalk that looks like a mechanical pencil with the various colors of chalk. So far it's done OK but the real test is when I unroll it on the frame and the marks are still there. I will look into the washable crayola markers.

Crayola Ultra Clean markers (fine tip) or Ultra Clean crayons (fat tip). They come out easier than the plain Washable ones. Just soak with water and a teeny bit of laundry soap & they come right out of most fabrics (a few people have posted here that some colors of the markers don't come out of some fabrics, so do a quick test EVERY time). Also, even though I'm like half-blind with seeing drawn marks, I have no problem working with the same color Ultra Clean as the fabric (for pink fabrics, I use the pink marker; for green fabrics, the green one, etc)
