Need Batting Advice
 

Hi!
I'm a novice when it comes to Batting. To date I have used Warm and White cotton and Mountain Mist polyester that I bought a Joann's, but want a good quality long lasting product. I do machine quilting. I am currently looking for batting for a double size Jelly Roll Race quilt, that will be quilted in the ditch (2 inches apart, but only on the horizontal). I want the puffiness of a polyester batting, but I do prefer to use cotton (natural products). i know Mountain Mist isn't the product that most quilters chose. What's a better choice? Is there a cotton batting with the loftiness of polyester? Is there a Joann's product you'd recommend? I buy online, too, so if not Joann, can you recommend an alternative.

If you like the loft of the product at Joann, then that's what I would buy. I use the polyester batting from Joanns, or their cotton batting if that cotto what I want.

No, there is not a cotton with the loftiness of poly. Cotton is a low loft batting. Natural fiber with high loft would be wool. Hobbs and Quilters Dream both make a very nice washable wool batting but it is very spendy. I reserve wool for special quilts. Many show quilters use wool.

High quality polyester bats with loft: Hobb's Polydown, Quiltersdream Dream puff are two that I have used. I like both but the Hobbs polydown is easier to find for me and less expensive for me. Another thing I like to do a lot is to double up layers of batting. I will very often mix a layer of cotton or cotton blend with a layer of poly on top to give the quilting definition and poof factor. But I quilt with a Longarm. It is very heavy to manipulate a 2 layer batted quilt in a domestic sewing machine.

Connecting threads has batting on sale at 30% off a couple of times a year on Hobbs products with free shipping on orders over $50. Before I got my resale tax certificate I would stock up then. As they just had the sale last month they probably won't have it again for another month or two. Just watch their website or sign up to receive their catalog so you know when it is happening.

I love Hobbs battings - connecting threads often has them on sale- and free shipping at $50. I also love the Dream Company battings. Hobbs and Dream Wool are my all time favorite batts- for lightweight, lofty, wonderful quilts. they are completely washable- needle beautifully- a joy to work with- breathable- and lofty. my bed quilt I used a wool batting in is so wonderfully fluffy, lofty, cozy every time I take it out of the dryer...I love that stuff!

Hobbs 80/20 batting is good quality, and it is 80% cotton. The poly gives it more loft than 100% cotton. That would be the one I recommend if you want to stay with primarily cotton.

Otherwise, if 100% poly is okay, I also really like Hobbs PolyDown. Has nice loft and softness.

Hobbs 80/20 is nice and I like the way it quilts up. Check on online to see if you can find a web site selling it at a sale or discount price with free shipping included. That was how I got mine.

Which is more economical, packaged batting or by the yard. I am making,JRRs and String quilts that will be around throw size ( 60 x 60) simply quilted as I am an eternal beginner.
