I have been buying my thread at Hancock's, Walmart or Hobby Lobby. I hate the multi purpose thread that I got. It is sooo thick that I have trouble threading my machine. It definitely does NOT work with my auto threader.
Can anyone recommend a great thread that not's so expensive I would need a loan???? I would like just a few colors to begin with like white, black, red, navy. I also do machine embroidery and love my emboidery thread but I need some for regular sewing and quilting. Thanks!! |
i buy all of my threads from Connecting Threads now...great prices, good color selection lots of choices...all better than wally world or joannes :)
atlanta thread company is another where some here buy regualarly...and superior threads (which personally i've not had good luck with) |
I have Bernina machines and they seem to like Mettler cotton silk finished thread. It is expensive and the last time I purchased any I found a place online. You can do a search and sometimes find a decent price. JoAnn's also sells Gutterman sometimes at 50% off and it is a fairly good thread. Haven't tried Connecting Threads brand but that may be my next stop as even thread prices are going up.

I use Gutterman and buy beige, lavender, pale blue or pale yellow which seems to blend well with most colors. I only use black if I am sewing on black fabric. This week Gutterman thread was on sale for 40% off at Joann's so I got some.

I agree about the Gutterman and the Mettler. If you are spending time and money on your quilts use the best thread. Thread is not that expensive. And it is better on your machine, I service machines and the good thread is not as dirty.

Please consider Aurifil - it will be more expensive than you have been paying - however, one spool lasts a long time - it is a clean thread with very little lint and strong. My Bernina loves this thread!
|
I also load up on thread when it is on sale at Joanns...bought all my Gutermann this week at 40% off..
|
I love Aurifil thread. It has minimal lint and lasts forever - you'll be filling the bobbin less often.

I don't do embroidery, just sewing and quilting. I love the thread I get from Connecting Threads.com. It is way more reasonable than C&C from Walmart or Hancock Fabrics. I have a Janome and it seems to like the Connecting Threads thread very well.

Star thread is made by C&C for machine quilting and it works just fine. You can buy it from eBay sellers pretty cheap. I bought a bunch of Long Creek Mills thread a couple of years ago and thought it was a great bargain for the nice quality. http://www.longcreekmills.com/product/quilting.html (The 5,000m cones are HUGE) I have also used quite a bit of their variegated embroidery thread for quilting - very pretty. |
I have used Aruifil only since it came out. For hand quilting I use only YLI.
|
I order my thread from these places:
Quilting thread I get from Threadart.com, they also sell some on Ebay. The standard cotton thread is 50 weight and heavy duty cotton is 40 weight. We also use this for sewing thread. Embroidery thread I order from marathonwest.com Both of these suppliers are very reasonable and the thread is very good. I've never had problems with knots or breakage like I've had with others. If you can get on there email list sometimes they have half price sales. |
Oh yeah, I forgot about ThreadArt - I love their embroidery thread and I use it for quilting and topstitching now that my embroidery machine turned out to be a turkey. :)
|
I've been using Maxi-Lock Serger thread and I'm very happy with it. I use it for regular sewing, piecing and quilting. I've not had a bit of trouble with it. I do use a thread stand behind my machine for it tho. And it comes in a variety of colors and is inexpensive, plus my machines like it too.
|
Also consider making a small investment for a cone thread holder. You will get a lot more bang for the buck if you buy your thread in cones.
|
My favorite piecing thread is Mettler silk Finish cotton. It is a bit pricey but I have found I usually only need 2 colors. I use a very pale grey for all my light colored piecing and a dark grey for my dark piecing. It was a tip from a lady at my LQS and so far I haven't noticed my stitches showing. For quilting I like Superior Threads King Tut 40 wt.
|
Melinda, I like it, too. Joann sells it in "generic" wrapping for $2/cone, and sometimes it's on sale for half price - it's already crazy cheap! Probably the linty-est thread I use, but being poly, it's strong - and it's a great size for piecing.
|
True, it is linty, but for the savings, I can clean my machine more frequently!

I just tried the Connecting Threads brand on a whim from all the recommendations I read here and I am shocked how much I LOVE it. I'm serious....I was shocked.I've been using a few of the Superior Brand threads and thought they were pretty decent. Now I'm finding I like the CT stuff even more than So Fine. Try it. It's cheap enough that even if you hate it, you won't be out all that much.
|
Thanks, I think I will purchase some from Connecting Threads!

The least amount of lint in my machine seems to be with Presencia thread. They also have a neutral "warm gray" that I use for piecing just about everything.

If you want to try Aurifil, Tristan Threads has it all on clearance. Candace, from Elk Grove CA, of this board gave us the tip. I placed a good sized order, and it IS all it's cracked up to be. I just placed another order, b/c of the clearance price. In the single spools/cones, many of the "neutral" colors are gone, but there's a set of 6 "piecing colors" -warm neutrals- 6 1300m spools of 50 wt cotton mako for $26. It's grab bag 7H. www.tristan.bc.ca Maybe do a group order to save on shipping. I told them Candace referred me, hope she gets a coupon or something, b/c I think I got a lot of thread at a great price. I don't think I would have tried it otherwise, but I'm glad I did. It is MUCH less linty. Just me-but Gutermann gives off the most lint in my machine. Mettler is good. I also love Masterpiece by Superior Threads, but it's $7.50 for a 600 yd spool, very pricey, IMHO.

Metler, Guterman or Aurafil
My Janome seems to do well with Aurifil |
