Need help with binding for my Dragonfly wall hanging!
1 Attachment(s)
I've just finished appliquéing this wall hanging and (of course) don't have enough of of the inner border to do a folded binding. It was only a FQ and I thought I'd be able to get another one easily......
Anyway - Plan a) Do a flanged binding with the inner in the green and the pink outer (not done one before) or; Plan b) Cut the binding from the green at 1 1/2 sew to back, press 'hem' and fold over to the front. I've only done this way once before on a pocket and the corners weren't mitred. Plan c) a different coloured border Also, should I do some FMQ in the pink border? Thank you for any help! Do you have enough of the multi-colored fabric used in the center of the block? You could use that. I really like the flange idea though. You can look up online how to do one. The give a nice "extra" to your border.

The wallhanging is beautiful! Personally, I'd use the pink so it blends, and I'd quilt around the border. The pink fabric is especially lovely.

I really like the idea of the multi colored fabric. This wall hanging is so beautiful!!! Love this as a future project!

Because your fabrics are all strongly patterned, I think you could get away with another batik in a pink or a dark if you wanted. I would just make a standard binding sewn to the front, folded to the back and handsewn. Oh - I forgot to say that your hanging is beautiful. Love the dragonflies.

I like alleyoop1's idea and option B. All in pink would not look framed to me.
As for the quilting, I'd say keep it consistent. I just saw a wallhanging at a show where one part was quilted densely and the other very loosely. It had a wavy border and hung very poorly. So a lot depends on what you plan for the center. |
First let me say, That's gorgeous! I really like the flanged border that Charisma posted. I think it would look really pretty with the pink as the binding and that off white as the flange but whatever you decide, it will be lovely. Is it needle turn appliqué and can you share the pattern name?

That is really lovely. How about the cream for the binding?
|
I like the idea of cream for the flange, and then alternating the green, the cream and the multi for the border. Please share where the pattern came from. Would be fantastic for pillows on a young girl's bed.

Any of your options would work. I think my choice would be to do the narrow fold to front binding with the green.

Like the flange idea too and can do a 2 colored binding sing 1" for front and 1 1/2 for other piece.

here's a link to the flange binding here on the QB http://www.quiltingboard.com/tutoria...ge-t77821.html

Pm me your email and i will email you pix of two green batiks that look close to yours. You never know one of them might work...

Beautiful quilt. Isn't it aggravating to run out of fabric!!!

Sometimes a wallhanging does not need a binding. Can be distracting IMHO. Here is what I use in those art type items.

Have you "auditioned" different fabric colors/choices?
I'm one of those needs to be weighted with a darker border. NO MATTER what you choose to do, it's beautiful. Great work! |
I'm not sure it needs any binding at all -- maybe depends on where it's going to go? I wouldn't mind there being a binding but I like it just as is.
Exceptional work! |
I like plan B.
|
I'd go with plan c and use another batik in either the pink or lilac from the quilt. It's a beautiful As a wall hanging I don't think you need to quilt the border, but it would look great either way.
|
I'd use the pink multi.

pillowcase with your backing?

Lovely wall hanging! I think a pink that is pulled from the border would look pretty. I wouldn't want anything that distracted the eye from the center though. It's too pretty.
|
You could "hem" the edge to the back and have the pink as the final border. Or do the backing the same size, sew all around and turn it inside out. Or can you find a dark that somewhat matches the dark. I love the applique.

use the dark green
|
First let me say it is a gorgeous wall hanging. I personally like the darker flange that acts as a border. I've used a flange in several quilts, always with beautiful results. I think I would use a pink, maybe the same pink as the border if you have enough fabric, for the binding. Or, since it is a wall hanging, you could add the flange, put the wall hanging right sides together, then batting, sew all around the quilt, leaving a 3-4" opening, trim the quilt, backing and batting, then turn right side out, then sew the opening closed. Press the quilt, then sew about 1/4 to 1/2" just inside the outside of the quilt, which gives the appearance of a binding and quilt the pink border. I discovered this method years ago when I was making 25 small wall hangings to be given away at a family reunion, one for each family (I have a big family), so this method worked well in finishing the quilts quickly. Hope this helps, unless of course I have confused you, which I sometimes do when explaining a method.

What a beautiful wall-hanging!
I think that a darker contrasting border would be nice, but it is gorgeous anyway. |
Wow, really pretty!!! Go for the flange, and some FMQ...I love it!
