I am new to the Quilting Board and have a question about binding a wall handing. I attached the binding and it came out very wavy. I removed it and started over. I am sure I have it squared up and ready to go again. I watched the online video explaining how to use glue and heat set. I tried that method on another small baby quilt and it worked great. But my problem is that I have machine appliqued pears that are going off the edge of the quilt sides. They still have a wave in them. I am assuming that is because of the quilting on them. Does any one have any suggestions that may help? Should I remove the pears and try to get it to lay flat without them? I also thought I could trim the wall hanging down a bit. The rest of the edges without the pears lay very flat. I hope this makes sense....Thanks so much for any suggestions.....

Are you using a walking foot?

Hello and welcome. I have found several tutorials on You Tube to be really helpful. Just type in binding and there are several. Hope this helps.

Did you do bias binding by chance? Sometimes bias binding does not want to lay.

well first if you have removed the binding again, i'd steam press the quilt and thenspray your border with some starch first. to firm it up.
if machine stitching binding, don't pull it too much. that can cause waves. can't think of any other reasons. good luck.

Thanks so much for all your suggestions. I do use a walking foot and I use a straight of grain binding. I keep looking at it and I think its because of the thick edge with the pears. I am not very good with the connection of the camera to the computer, but I will get one of the kids to help me.

Here are the pictures of my wall hanging. It is hard to see but I tried to take a picture of how the edge is wavy. Do you have any suggestions on how to flatten when the applique goes off the edge of the quilt? Thank you for your help!

An initial suggestion is to press it with a pressing cloth. Put a bit of water spray on the cloth. Then put something heavy on the edge while it is still warm.
I took a class recently and the teacher said she always puts something heavy on her seams after pressing.
Lengthen your stitch when you sew the binding (if you have not already done so) this might be causing it to buckle as well.

thanks for the suggestions....You don't think I should try to either take out some of the quilting on the edge of that pear or quilt it more to flatten it? I know I am strange, but it is a pet peeve of mine to not have it hang flat on the wall....

I looks like you need to spray down your quilt and block it with pins until dry and flat. You can then add your binding.

Two things....Spray Starch works wonders. Spray it down wait a few minutes then iron. That takes up a lot of imperfections. Then if that doesn't totally work I would trim the side down a bit, maybe a 1/4 of an inch to eliminate some of the wave. Good luck!
