Need Help with this block
1 Attachment(s)
I have uploaded my fabric I am using for this quilt into Electric Quilt. I printed the rotary sizes for this block, What it does not tell me is how to piece this block together. EQ says this is a churn dash block. Can someone tell me the order to sew this block.
Thanks for the Help. April |
You need to assemble it using a partial seam. Here is a good tute with pictures. http://piecebynumber.com/partial_seams.htm

Thank you so much.

I would assemble the green, tan, plaid units first.
Then I would attach the first unit to the center block with a partial seam. See attached. (Hope you get the idea from the drawings) |
Ok - I'm still learning. What is a partial seam?
Thanks! |
Thank you, That helps alot, I had played with it and figured I would have to make the green, tan and plaid first, I just could not figure out how to get the rest, I tried but got puckers. Thanks for your help.

A partial seam - where one only sews part of it - see the illustration - For the first seam, I only sewed between the arrows and then the rest of it is left open - I usually TIE the threads in the "middle" of the seams instead of backstitching.
The "partial seam construction" was a mystery to me, too. It's a handy technique to know about. |
I am so glad to learn about this new technuque, This will open up lots of new blocks I can do.
|
You could also draft it out for paper piecing, which is the way I would do it since I absolutely hate partial seaming and y seams.
|
That, or you could add a seam down the center of the large tan pieces. This would make it a 9 patch and the corners would be made of half square triangles.

Try breaking the block down like this.
Jan in VA |
Churn Dash? or center of a Balkan Puzzle block or Whirlpool block? I agree with Jan, you are missing the 8 lines to divide this up into 16 squares. I prefer handling HST's and squares vs. triangles. You could also do the rectangle with the square sewn on at the angle, press, and trim off at 1/4".
Here is a downloadable tutorial on the Whirlpool block that shows each step: http://www.quiltmag.com/resources/qu...011-whirlpool/ |
I'd was going to suggest Half Square Triangles, but Jan in VA already did AND provided the graph for you.
|
This looks so much easier
|
Jenny Doan from Missouri Star Quilting has a tutorial on the churn dash block. She keeps it simple when she does tutorials.
|
Bearisgray has planned it out great.
|
Thanks for the drawn example. I know it will help a lot of newer quilters. Great job.

I agree with Jan - but I would make it even simpler. I would do the HSTs in the corner and on the
rectangles do one triangular corner. Although I do "Y" seams - they are n ot a favorite. Here is the EQ block redrawn as I would do it |
My first thought was HST as well, good job Jan in VA

...or extend the horizontal and vertical lines and some those can be half square triangles...much easier that way and I really don't think that pattern is a true churn dash!!!!!
|
Jan in VA this was my first thought when I saw the block. Seems to be the easiest way to me.
