Need help for borders on this quilt
7 Attachment(s)
I could use some help with what borders to put on this quilt. I am posting a pictures of all the fabrics I have left that may work for the border. I also don't have any of the dark border that I used for sashing. I have looked everywhere for something similar but can't find any that are close or in the same tones. I need about a 15 to 20 inch drop of this. I really would like to have less on the top but don't know if this is possible. I would like other suggestions also.
The last picture is a thought that maybe I should do a braid of all the different colors in the quilt. Thanks |
I vote for 3rd down on left. I like the varied width of the borders. :)
I like the second on the left side. It makes the blocks pop.
I've been dealing with a border issue also. I like the third on the left group and also the braid idea is terrific. Your quilt is fabulous.
peace |
I like the second on the right. the dark, white, mauve and then wide dark print.
I like the second on the right as well, because it picks up so well on the colors in the quilt. However, my second choice would be the second on the left, because as Swan Song says, it really makes those blocks pop! I guess it's your choice what effect you want to achieve. BTW it's a truly gorgeous quilt!
I vote for the second down on the right. The narrow borders really frame the quilt and I like the dark fabric. The quilt is very pretty.

yep, 3rd down on left. the black larger border with the burgundy or what ever looks great!!
I like the 3 down on the left. I think the braid might detract from the main design.

I really like the 3rd dwon on the left.

I'm another for third on the left ... it frames and it pops!
If you want to see some quilts done with a similar setting, take a look at these. http://www.quiltingboard.com/blocks-...148904-21.html You'll find mine at post #203. Most of the borders have been kept fairly simple, as you want to be drawn to the work in the centre, as I'm sure you want to do with your quilt. With yours, it looks like your centre has fewer fabrics than most of the FWS quilts, and so you can use more fabrics in the borders. Somewhere I read that multiple borders should never have the same widths, which is what you've done in the 3rd on the left, for a really nice classic look without taking from the centre of the quilt. And now ... you've left us wanting to see the whole quilt top ... please? |
I like the fourth the most but the third is a good alternative
I love the dark varigated fabric. It would really make everything pop IMHO.
The whole top Mom forgot to post :)

Silly Mom - she forgot to post the whole thing! Here you go...
I vote for third on the left. It looks "complete" to me, whereas the others look as if something is missing. Just my opinion, of course.
Your quilt and the others are gorgeous. None seem to have a wide border though which is what I am having trouble with. Does anyone have any suggestions other than what I posted?

As I mentioned, yours is less scrappy looking and with the larger blocks, so the multi wide border should work well with it. I still think the 3rd on the left is a perfect choice for yours.
BEAUTIFUL quilt!!! I am no help with borders though..sorry, I just had to shout about your quilt!!

3rd one also. Beautiful quilt top!
Third on left and second on right. in that order of preference.

Cannot offer any advice, but I must say your work is so incredibly gorgeous that whatever border you choose the completed quilt will be awesome.
Like the third on the left since balances the blocks and will be the entire drop. I feel that while the narrow borders match, they are to narrow to balance all the background fabric on both sides. Good luck, the blocks are lovely.

Another vote for third down on the left--the colors and the widths shown would set off the top nicely. My second choice would be a braid without the two lightest (whites), which would be very attractive too, I think, maybe with the whites as strips with a couple of the other colors to set it off.
I vote for 3rd down on left too. Say...you wouldn't happen to be an 1895 addict? Love your fabrics!
I would like to see that sashing color you have on the blocks as a border. Just my thoughts.
I vote for the 3rd down on the left. The first dark border stops my eye and lets me focus on the lovely blocks.
The dark print on the bottom gives the overhang some weight. Just my thoughts |
I too think 3rd down on left. the black larger border with the burgundy or what ever looks great!! I think a braid border would be too busy and detract from your blocks. Post a picture when completed. Please!
I vote for the third down on the left too!
I agree! My fav also!

I like the third down on the left also. I prefer dark borders though. Pretty quilt.
I would use the third one on the left also, but change it just a little. I would use a narrow border of the big black print, then another narrow strip of the lightest you have, probably the pink, and then a wide border of the big black print.
I have made several like that, and I think they are stunning. Somehow the light strip cutting through the dark just brings out the black very nicely. I cut the narrow borders 1.25 inches and the wide border 5 inches. That gave me 3/4 inch each of the first two borders in the finished quilt. |
i like 4 and 5. 1 2
3 4 5 6 the quilt top looks sumptuous!! |
Hi Vivian - I like the 3rd photo on the left too. However, the larger border could be any of the fabrics. I think I would choose blue but that's because of personal preference. Thanks for showing us the full quilt. It's beautiful! Show us the final quilt when you finish it.

SooBDo, I am not sure how you know the type of fabric. I have looked everywhere to match this up because I needed more of the dark maroon fabric for the border. I have been in many quilt shops and no one could tell me about this fabric. I sent my husband into a shop with a strip of the fabric and the lady identified it as Hoffman 1895. (She said your wife probably knows that. HeeHee). I was able to look online and find it. I have since ordered 3 yards just to have extra. I just wanted to say you are good. I don't know much about fabric lines but I think it is time I learned.
