In my experience, it matters what the backing is: if it's a batik, it may be more tightly woven and a smaller knot is required. A Mode marble backing, recently, was soft and more loosely woven, so I needed a bigger knot.

Here is the little tutorial of how I bury short threads you cannot thread on a needle. I dont' know where I saw this or who taught me, but I use this when I long arm.
