I can't decide whether to just continue using the 1" squares or use maybe the dark blue as cornerstone blocks or maybe it needs something else...any ideas ? The small squares are just laid out..they look like I sewed them on crooked don't they? LOL!

Oh my, this is going to be a gorgeous quilt.... I like your idea of using the dark blue corner stones....

quiltnana 11-06-2007 04:16 PM

Sandpat that is beautiful. I like the squares in the edge it brings all the colors out in the quilt and keeps the focus on the mariners compass. Very nice job.

Moonpi 11-06-2007 04:32 PM

Beautiful!

patricej 11-06-2007 05:07 PM

do you have enough of the right fabrics left to make one more inner circle? if you did, and divided it into quarters (plus seam allowances), you could put one on each corner of the quilt. it would keep the compass theme intact, be an unexpected bonus in the border and ... the best part ... rounded corners are soooooo much easier to bind. :P

Celeste 11-06-2007 05:38 PM

This is beautiful! I wanted to comment on the outer edges.. they look like (mosaic) tile!

Chele 11-06-2007 06:01 PM

Wow! I love your outer edges! They really frame those gorgeous blocks. What a quilt. That's a show-stopper! My favorite colors too! I think anything you add to to the corners will really take it over the top! It would look good with just a frame of your colorful squares too. I can't wait to see this one quilted. So pretty!

bj 11-06-2007 06:04 PM

Your quilt is gorgeous! I like Patrice's idea for the corners, but I can't think that anything you do would not be perfect. Can't wait to see th finished product.

amma 11-06-2007 06:05 PM

Awesome Quilt! I love the blues and your compass blocks are amazing! I agree that the patchwork looks mosaic and really compliments the design! :D :D :D

PamH 11-06-2007 06:10 PM

Awesome quilt  It will beautiful anyway you choose to finish it.

lin 11-06-2007 06:12 PM

Sandpat that is an amazing quilt! I love what you're doing for the borders. It is exactly what that quilt calls for.

I think Patrice is on to something here. My very first thought when I saw your question and looked at the quilt was that it would be so spectacular if you could somehow bring the flavor of the compass into the corners, even if only the center of them, or a smaller version. (but then I noticed how large they are in contrast to the border and thought "no" that wouldn't do. ) But using even a part of the block would be gorgeous.

I also agree with Chele. That really is a show-stopper. :)

sewmuch 11-06-2007 06:13 PM

Thats a beautiful quilt, you did an excellent job on the mariners square

ShellyQ 11-06-2007 08:00 PM

That's gonna be a beautiful quilt what ever you choose to do. Just my personal opinion but your 1'" squares do create a lovely mosaic effect and without interuption at the corners will flow beautifully around the quilt. I personally wouldn't interupt the design at the corners, but either way it's gonna be lovely

blahel 11-06-2007 11:22 PM

What a beautiful quilt..that is one quilt i would like to make one day and i love the colors and the mosaic border is just perfect as it sets off all the colors in your quilt...i think i agree that it would look good with the mosaic border all the way around.

Hollyquilter 11-07-2007 04:15 AM

All I can say is WOW!!! DOUBLE WOW!!!! This is gorgeous! What beautiful points on the compass (something for me to aspire to!)

I love the mosaic border and I agree that the 1/4 compass in the corners would put this one over the top. If I may, I'd suggest that if you do use the 1/4 compass corners, make the mosaic border wide enough to accommodate it.

The colors are fantastic too!

Thanks for sharing!

Minda 11-07-2007 05:35 AM

Gorgeous!!
I love the little squares for the border.

sandpat 11-07-2007 05:40 AM

 Oh, thank you all for the compliments. I had thought that I might try to "shrink" the compass, divide it into 1/4's and use that. I had not thought of doing it with rounded corners though...hmmmm..what a great idea. I think I'll use the dark blue for the binding and am planning to do some trapunto work in the blue squares..maybe feather wreaths or even a mariners compass.

Thanks for all the thoughts..I think I will try to do a small compass ( maybe I'll try to learn to paper piece to do that) and audition all of your ideas. I always have to lay them out to look and think about for a while before actually doing anything. I've only been quilting for a little over a year...so I'm kind of slow in making decisions.

Thanks again for all the compliments.

It is drop dead gorgeous already. No matter what you decide, it is a stunning quilt!

That is EXACTLY what I was thinking!

2 votes for the quarter compass as cornerstones!

N.J.linda 12-17-2007 05:47 PM

you could use 1/4 of that beautiful mariners compass that is in the center part of the quilt......I've done that and it really sets it off.

bj 12-17-2007 05:54 PM

Since this kindof an older post, I'd be interested to see what you finally decided to do. I'd love to see the finished project. Your first picture is so pretty.

estherblair 12-17-2007 06:17 PM

I stand in aweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Butterfly Queen 12-17-2007 07:04 PM

I agree with Shelly.. It does create a beautiful mosaic effect..

sandpat 12-24-2007 03:40 PM

I know ya'll won't believe that I still haven't finished this quilt, but...have been really sidetracked. Anyway..I have finished sewing together all the small squares (I think) for the outer border..so far over 1900 by hand.

I have finished the 1st step of the machine trapunto by stitching mariner's compasses in the dark blue squares also before I added the outer border.

At this point after laying the quilt out and looking at different options I am leaning towards continuing the mosaic look all the way around the quilt. Maybe during the "lull" between the holidays I'll get the border attached, the sandwich done and can start on the quilting. Thanks for your interest..I'll post a pic when done...it may be a LONG time from now though!!

Dawn Hendrix 12-25-2007 04:40 AM

HOLY WOW! That is just gorgous.. I love the 1 inch blocks they look like stained glass. I can't give advice on this one .. but WOW it surely is beautiful!

newquiltertoni 12-25-2007 04:52 PM

This is beautiful and I think the blue corners will set it off. Either way it is very nice.

sandpat 12-27-2007 03:09 PM

I'll be glad to do it. My by-hand progress is a slow process so it will be a few more days before I have the borders on. Don't you always just get excited when you reach a "big" transition in the quilt...like adding borders?!

AnnK 12-27-2007 05:36 PM

Sandpat, your quilt is absolutely gorgeous. Spectacular

Ok..here it is so far with the borders attached. I now have some marking to do and I've decided to do some more trapunto work before I sandwich it. Anyhow...forgive the press & seal in the pic...(I've learned this is a bad idea-it gummed up my machine -maybe I'm doing it wrong...don't know). Now off the puter and onto quilt marking...Happy New Year!
