I am looking for an idea to make a head bumper, curtain and a quilt for this crib and I am not able to come up with anything.

It has to be blueish for a boy and I think not to fancy for this kind of crib. Something simple and classy............
No applique unless there are files available for the embroidery machine, no pinwheel, no bears - pp would be fine.

As you can see I only know what I dont want!?
Would appreciate any help.

great aunt jacqui 01-15-2011 12:45 PM

my sister made a complete cover for a similar bassnette. she used pre quilted white fabric. It was all one piece, inside was made just like you were making a big basket then she added about 2 ft of same fabric completely around the outside for the skirt. She made several big box pleats. She added a simple row of light blue ribbn around the bottom with decorative stitching in blue.

you could leave the ends open to fit over those handles
her grandson only stayed in it for a month before he moved to a regular crib.

That bassinet is the cutest!!!! Can't wait to see what you make for it.

granny_59 01-15-2011 03:26 PM

the matress is 20" x 40" so I hope my grandson number three will stay in there at least six month.
But I only have six more weeks to come up with something as I will be gone for the month of march and baby is due beginning of april.

I can picture that prequiltet fabric but I would like it a bit fancier.
Maybe someone has the ultimate idea...........please

Please be careful with what you put in the crib. :) Bumpers and other soft items shouldn't be there, because of SIDS.

Boah............I have never heard a thing like that! Why? We make bumpers only on the end where the head lies and not all the way around. Got my kids bedded like that and first two grandsons also.

I wonder if you could adapt a moses basket liner to fit your crib? mccalls i think has a pattern for one and there are some instructions available online.

the basic sewing pattern is not the problem. But I dont want it sewn with plain fabric. I would like to add a patchworkpattern - if I only could come up with one that would look great on it.

bakermom 01-15-2011 04:14 PM

I see, i misunderstood what you were asking for. what about a tumbler pattern done in shades of blues and a few novelty prints thrown in?

Here's a tutorial on how to make one using charm packs. I just cut 5" strips and the use the template.

thanks a lot bakermom, it looks really nice. I did google picture search and was thinking that 1930s style pattern might be nice on this crib............

its 1.30 a.m. over here and I have to go to bed. Maybe I dream of the ultimate pattern!?

SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) can occur when babies or infants get their heads pressed up against soft objects, such as a bumper. There are a lot of causes of SIDS against which parents are strictly warned, one of which is not leaving any soft objects in a crib. Babies are only supposed to have a tight-fitted sheet on a firm mattress in order to protect against suffocation hazards. As a mom, I certainly wouldn't risk it. My kids will only use a tight-fitted sheet, and that's it. Have millions (actually, probably billions) of babies survived just fine with soft stuff in their cribs? Of course. Have a few died because of soft stuff? Yes. Will I risk my child? No way!

There have been major educational campaigns in recent years in the US and some other nations (I've been told that Australia is one) to educate new parents, and the rate of SIDS deaths has dropped dramatically.

Just wondering what is recommended to keep the little ones warm? I used to use blankets, is this not recommended now? So much changes.

That is a beautiful bassinet.

Definitely be cautious about using bumpers. Here is a link to some research on the dangers of bumpers

There are items called "sleep sacks" available at Target, WalMart, Kmart, etc.

Is this what you are looking for??I had one all in pink for my daughter.

"A study from Washington University in St. Louis (PDF) looked at infant deaths attributed to crib bumpers from 1985 to 2005 and found that 27 children under the age of 2 died due to strangulation or suffocation by bumper pads or their ties"

A bit shocked I went into those links and found that. So 27 kids in 20 years - each one a terrible loss.
Then I looked at the number of births in your country and came up with 4.3 Million in 2007, so I will go with 4 Million times 20 and get ruffly 80 Million births within the last 20 years. Please correct me if this is completly wrong.

So 27 out of 80 Million is 0.00003375 %. I could not find any data how many children suffocated on peanuts in the same period, but I am afraid that number is quite a bit higher. So as long as I am not able to keep the world of my children and grandchildren peanut free, I am not going to worry about a crib bumper.
MINE will be tight and krisp and securely binded on the outside.................if I finally come up with a nice pattern.
Would still greatly appreciate suggestions.

Mattee 01-16-2011 05:58 AM

Sleepsacks are available, but it's easy to find a sleeper that is an appropriate weight to keep a baby warm. It used to be recommended that people really overdress their babies, but it was found that overheating was a contributing factor for SIDS. Babies are ideally supposed to sleep in a room that is 68-72 degrees, and be dressed in the same manner an adult would to be comfortable. If I had a sleep sack on over my PJ's in that temperature range, I would roast. We just dress my kids in pj's, and it works just fine.

I hope that helps!

Like I wrote, it's rare, but it doesn't feel rare if it affects you. I know that kids also strangle on peanuts (and lots of other things), so I also don't put them within arm's reach. Good luck with whatever you decide!

Dear Mattee

I am really getting upset over here. All I did was asking for a nice pattern for a crib quilt that could be somehow repeated in a crib bumper and the curtain.

What sence does it make to scare young mothers (and grandmothers) with this SIDS. Have you been personally affected in some way?
If my estimate of 80 Million births the last 20 years is about right than the number of babies suffocating or strangeling themselfs is some number with four zeros after the semicolon!?

Is there a study whether those 27 dead babies (still I am very sorry about each of them) where laying in a crib that was restored by grandpa and stuffed with a handmade cribset from grandma? Born into a careing family with common sence enough not to let them freeze or grill in their crib.

I know there is this terrible SIDS but all I know is that not one single study came up with exact reasons why this happens.

It is also a fact that fear is a very bad advisor specially in raising children. I will, as I always have, trust in my common sence and in my believe that there is also something above us.

So unless you have a good idea for a quiltpattern please dont answer to this topic anymore.

Mattee 01-16-2011 08:12 AM

SIDS has been brought up many times on this forum, usually when someone asks for a bumper or quilt pattern, as many people have not been educated about its causes. I will never apologize for providing information that could save a baby's life. I don't believe I did so in an inappropriate manner, either, nor have the many others who have provided similar information in similar threads in recent months. I don't think you should get so upset over learning information that will keep a baby safe. I hope you get what you want, and that your grandkids are safe.

Oh, and if you'll notice, I was directly responding above to someone's question about SIDS and keeping babies warm.

Here is a link on how to make bassinet bedding. No pics, and I think it is only for a sheet, but it might help some.

Thank you Sandyo and Nursie, the blue fabric line is so cute.

@Mattee

As OP to this topic I still feel that you did not answer my question. And in my humble opinion you do not educate you operate with fear.
And like all people operating with fear instead of facts you do not have any arguments.
Not one single study relates SIDS with headpumpers and some come up that it MIGHT be related to overwarming of the baby or bad circulation of air inside of the crib due to overstuffing it with whatever items.

I think it is a very noble thing to do anything that saves babies lifes where ever you can. How about educating yourself about the number of babies and infants loosing their lifes due to abuse and neglecting as this is not rare and see where you can bring in your help there.

Mattee 01-16-2011 10:19 AM

Well, I'm certainly done reading this thread. Expecting parents in the US (and some other places) are inundated with info about SIDS by their pediatricians, nurses, and OB's. Since the educational campaign began, SIDS deaths have decreased. I've seen the research myself (not just googling it one afternoon), and it is real. Grandparents don't often get this info, since they're not seeing the same doctors that expecting parents are.

I was only trying to help, not spread fear. I'm only afraid when I'm ignorant, not when I'm well educated about how to avoid proven risks.

If anyone else would like more info, there is tons available on the web, although a pediatrician is likely more reliable and accurate. Feel free to PM me if you would like more info as well.

Sorry I did not realize you were from Switzerland and could maybe not get the fabric. My thought is that the simpler the better because the crib itself is so beautiful you need a simple design on the fabric and bedding. I've seen a baby quilt done in pinwheel pattern with different shades of blue.

granny_59 01-16-2011 11:38 AM

"Since the educational campaign began, SIDS deaths have decreased"

From 0.00003375 % to 0.00003350 % ???????? If you are proud of american numbers on educating expecting parents ( at least those with healtinsurance) get into the data of child abuse and percentage of unmarried parenthood in your country.
This is my last answer to this subject.

@Sandyo: I kind of have enough fabric in my stash  and even if I said initially that I dont want to make pinwheels I saw Eleanor Burns double pinwheel and it might look good to put the half with the darker fabric dominating into the cribquilt and the other one into the pumper and curtain.
Just as you say I dont want to overdue it as the crib looks so nice.
thank you

bakermom 01-16-2011 12:19 PM

I think your idea of using dark blue for the quilt and light for the bumpers sounds great!
I'm partial to gingham curtains for nurseries.
if i can find a couple of pics of some tops i've made recently I'll send them off to you. maybe give you some ideas.

granny_59 01-16-2011 12:31 PM

Hi bakermoon

had a short look at the gingham curtains......lovely fabric! where do you buy it and do you use it for babyquilts also?
