Hi all, have just finished queen sized jewel box quilt for my sister. Yellow background and patterned red, orange. black and browns. This was my first queen size quilt which I meandered myself on my Janome QC. It is way from perfect but I am so pleased that it looks ok. When I can work out how to do it, I will post a picture of it. Thank you for all your help with it. Now my DD would like me to make her a black and white queen for her bed. I have searched for another pattern but cannot make my mind up which to do. Do you think that a jewel box pattern would be okay in black and white? Patterne material not solid colour, except for the background which I was thinking should be white. She would be happy for me to put in a small amount of another colour, but I think I would like to keep it black and white. What do you all think?

I like an accent color added to black and white, but it is a personal preference of mine.

I think another pattern would look better as a two color quilt. The Irish Chain comes to mind but there are others.

Many thanks for all your answers. Have looked at your link doghousemum, but don't think i like it as much as i thought i would. Have searched and found another one by Kayaker26 which is a black and white disappearing nine patch. Looks lovely, but not sure what size squares should do for a queen. Any ideas?

Hi Coventry, see that you are UK to. Your quilt is lovely. What size is it.

Pretty quilt!

I've seen lots of fun two color quilts lately:
Hunters Star Irish Chain Eyes of March (from Quilterscache -- but paper piecing) Night and Day (eleanor burns) Depending on the patterns of fabric (if you have fabrics that span the two values), you could also do a Log Cabin with another color as the very middle (red/pink/blue/yellow). I just saw one out here that was gorgeous but don't have a link for you I just completed one that was mostly black and white and I had originally started out as all B&W, but in the end had to add some pink! |

I haven't got all the fabric yet. I have some black and white patterned fat quarters and hope to go shopping - fun - as soon as I sort out what pattern to do. I am leaning toward the disappearing nine patch. Only used this in cushions previously, but Kayaker26 one in gallery set me to thinking. For a queen size quilt I would need the blocks to be at least 12 inches I'm guessing, so would want the smaller squares in the block to be at least 4 1/2". As you may quess, I am fairly new to planning a quilt. LOL

Here is a quilt top I just finished it might give you an idea. This picture was taken outside the colors are more vibrant then they appear.

Some awesome ideas here.

Wow, you lot are amazing. Think I need to sit down with pencil (eraser!) and paper.
Thanks for all your help. Sue |
I am new. Can someone tell me how to delete these post and repost with the picture.
Thanks. |

Hunters Star!
Irish Chain! Monkey wrench! Trip Around the World with shades from blk to wh! That log cabin is WOW! peace :D |
I just made one in fall colors that calls for transparency in the color choices. You want a light, medium, dark and medium print in the same color family. The idea is that where the blocks visually 'overlap', it looks like the top and bottom colors blend.
A white, black, a print with mostly black and a print with mostly white would work nicely! http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-131062-1.htm |
I have a black and white quilt that was made for me Just square blocks but it had lots of diffrent shades and patterns turned out very pretty
|
A D9P would look nice. I would personally put in a red block in the center of the 9 patch. That would just set everything off. But that's just me. You'll have to let us see what you finally decide on.
|
She'll be happy whatever you decide to do!

Hi, I made one with black, white and red. However, when I washed it the red ran onto the other colors. Lesson for next time: Wash the red first!
|
The prettiest black & white quilts I've seen here are D9P. A pop of red puts them over the top fabulous. I haven't done one yet, but I intend to.
|
Such a fantastic group here, now you have so many ideas to decide on, enjoy.
|
you might try using the Shout color Catchers in your wash with your quilts. I've had good luck with them taking in the colors that bleed and keeping the lights light. just FYI
|
Thank you all so much. You have given me so much to think about. There are so many gifted quilters here, not sure that I will ever be able to do such wonderful work, but sure intend to keep trying.

The Hunters Star and Drunkards Path are both nice in two colors.
|
A touch of a "jewel" color would be pretty.
|
On Friday someone posted a picture of a black and white, gray and white blocks....it was called Betty's Delight and they found it on Quilter'scache....
It would look great in black and white.. Good Luck. |

My favorite 2-color block pattern is "Hunter's Star". I also like "Night and Day" by Eleanor Burns.
