Need help with fabric choices
These are the fabrics for my Quilts for Quilters Swap: I'd like to get some in-put as to my choices so far.
I'm still picking out fabrics for islandwiz1's quilt. Hope to post some pics of the fabrics to get feedback on my choices. I'm worried that the quilt may read a little "VANILLA". The fabrics are gorgeous, and in assorted blues with a "touch of sparkle", I also have a green for leaves to place here and there. Please give me your thought and ideas....I will NOT be offended....just want a little in-put :) OK, here are my fabrics....so far.http://www.quiltingboard.com/attachm...432050-010.jpg All the fabshttp://www.quiltingboard.com/attachm...432072-011.jpg Fabric 1 http://www.quiltingboard.com/attachm...432091-012.jpg Fabric 2 http://www.quiltingboard.com/attachm...432106-014.jpg Fabric 3 |
Ok, I love, love the blue fabrics. I don't think it looks vanilla at all.
To be honest though I really am not that crazy about the green with those blue fabrics. just my opinion though. Did I say I love the blues :) |
Ditto to cinnya. Good luck.
I am not familiar with the pattern you plan to use, but I don't see a lot of contrast in the blues. A different green might be a better choice.
I'll be making a Dresden Plate with the pointed blades.....the colors are much more vibrant than the pics.
Love the blues-ditch the green-if you are going to put leaves in maybe you could try a more solid-ish blue or even silver Best of luck Merry Christmas
I agree with the others ditch the green. Go with white or a dark navy tone on tones.
Love the blues- the green not so much ..... what color will the plate lay on ?
I agree ... the green is interferring with the blues. The blues are beautiful together.
I also agree. The green does not fit very well. I think a touch of off white and another of deep indigo would help set off those wonderful blues you already have.
I've tried the blues out on several background fabrics....ranging from white to cream....they all just don't look quite "right".....any suggestions????
My friend has a bolt of off-white it kinda reads greyish, I may go with that for the background for my blocks. |
The blues are awesome, but, like the others, that green must go. Perhaps a darker green with perhaps a black paisley to tie it together. And either a soft grey or white with a hint of blue to it would work for the background fabric.
The off white_ grayish sounds perfect.
Sorry about this I was trying to add the quote and messed up.<my friend="" has="" a="" bolt="" of="" off-white="" it="" kinda="" reads="" greyish,="" i="" may="" go="" with="" that="" for="" the="" background="" my="" blocks.=""></my> |
love everything you have....i think it needs a dark...something that reads as navy and picks up the few navy details in the other prints... and maybe one much lighter...tho not much of it..... the green is perfect... it has a lot of yellow in it which is the direct complement to the blues you have chosen...just realize that all the blues you have chosen are the same value for the quilt...you just have to add some light and some dark to go with..... that green will be smashing with navy!... i read something years ago by Michael Miller, fabric designer and quilt maker....he said if a group of fabrics looked like something was wrong, to trust your eye but add don't subtract.... i think a little white on white and a couple of deep blues not solid but not much white in them either...one navy with a tiny line drawing with green in it would be wonderful.... just see what you can find....
read all the other remarks....i think the green is wonderful in there...it's what makes the blues soft and makes them stand out...contrast is your friend...i would put 2 or 3 more prints with the same green in there to tie them together....add, don't subtract..... |
I agree with deemail. It will be a gorgeous quilt!

I love the blues. I'm not so crazy about the green. The blues are "cool" tones, the green looks like it has a yellow-ish base making it a little too "warm" to fit in with the "cool" blues. Just my opinopn, of course. It's YOUR quilt and if you like the green, the go for it!
Ok, I'll weigh in here. I like the idea of the green but not that green. Too warm. It needs to be, IMO, a cooler green, not so much yellow. Audition some other greens and yes, some navy. :) This will be a beautiful quilt!
I am with the rest. love the blues but not the green.
Love the fabrics with the blues but seems like not quite the right green to make a statement. Can't wait to see what you make.
It is your quilt.
I think those blues aren't enough contrast but would look like a worn out watercolor quilt. More contrast would make them pop and I think be more visually pleasing. That green isn't my choice. It is too much for me. ali |
I like to have light—medium—and dark fabrics in a collection. Pictures don't always tell the story—the shades seem to have a medium cast. As "QM" recommended, a lighter shade and deeper indigo will make your beautiful prints "pop."
(I've made way too many quilts will all mediums!) |
I agree with every one else. The green doesn't go. The blues you have picked are beautiful, but are all medium. You need to "shake" it up a little. Maybe some very dark blues or some very light. Let us see what you come up with and save the green for another project.

I disagree with the ladies above. Maybe it would help to see the pattern you propose to use, but I can almost envision looking out across a beach through green hanging palm leaves towards waves of ocean blue.
I love the materials but... you asked for opinions. The blues are nearly all the same tone/shade. Need some darker and some lighter to give depth or dimension or contrast depending on your pattern. Another color usually works in a pattern to add a note of surprise but not this green. Another darker green or go with contrast and use a golden yellow which will look beautiful against this blue. Have fun playing with other fabric colors.
Please let us know what you decide on and we would love to see the quilt when finished. Happy quilting. |

Still auditioning assorted fabrics for the quilt. Thanks for all the in-put :) |
Did you see the picture of the Dresden Plate with the black in it? It was the most beautiful Dresden many of us have ever seen - and it was because of the black that sparked the whole thing. Try a black print with your blues. Ditch the idea of any green.

The blues are beautiful but best I can tell from the photo are similar in value. You might add a solid or tone-on-tone pale pale blue and a dark/dark (use the floral to reference the light/dark).
i'm sorry, i'm really trying to influence you but not to what i like....what i think you saw when you chose your samples.... that green .... is the lifeblood of that group.... it is what makes all the blues so vibrant....with a light and a dark you are gonna love it... and i think your idea of to do something 'smashing' with it is just right...an occasional 'shadow' under one or two blades in the plate, or a tiny appliqued leaf or flower in the corner or the block or on the plate...or a tiny zinger flange border between all your blocks and their border... and if you don't like the neutral for the background of the plates, how about using the dark blue on blue for the backgrounds? all your mediums will then be 'lights' unless you add a little white here and there... remember, value is all relative...
Waht is the center and background of your plates? I am not sure about the green with it.
Love the green. It all deepens on the result you are looking for. If you want a fresher, spicy quilt add a dark blue in the same tones as the blues you have and keep the green. If you are after a traditional quilt tone down the green. This has been a great thread thank you.
