Tartan and I think alike. That is exactly what I would do.

With a little bit of work and a small investment you could convert this into paper piecing. The advantage would be you wouldn't have to worry about bias edges stretching or loosing your points. This would also be a good idea if you are planning on making more than one of these types of quilts. Otherwise there are some good suggestions above.
