Need help with Fold & Sew block
 

My fold & sew quilt blocks are coming out in different sizes - the blocks start out using a 10 inch square with a 5 inch square used inside. Depending on the placement of the 5 inch square, my blocks vary between 9 1/2 inch finished size to about 9 inch finished size when completed. Should I just vary the size of the sashing when I join the blocks?

how cute. looks like they should come out 9 inches. 1/2 inch taken for first seam, then another 1/2= 1 inch total taken away from 10 inch block.

i noticed that when i watched the video too. i'd cut them down to the same size... i don't think i'd like the varied width sashings.. jmho

If you place the square in the center, you sew two seams in each direction. The two seam allowances take up 1" of fabric, so the block reduces to 9" (8 1/2 finished). If you place the square in a corner, you only do one seam each direction, so you end at 9 1/2" (8" finished). You're not doing anything wrong, that's just how it works. Another vote here from trimming them all to 9" before sashing.

Yes, I agree with Krisb. YOu notice that in the video, all the sample quilts have blocks with all the same placement. Don't vary the sashing, cut them all down to the smallest size (sounds like 9")

I would like to hear from some of you after you try this technique. It seems to me that there would be a lot of bulk in the seams, especially those pinwheels and other blocks where there are triangle folds in the corners.
