Need Help - Joining the end of binding
 

Hi all! I am feverishly working to achieve my goal of completing my patriotic quilt by the end of the day. Only the binding remains to be done. Normally that wouldn't be an issue. However, we are spending time with our son in Greece, NY (Rochester area) and I left my nifty Binding Tool ruler thingy at home!! ARRGGH! Normally I really like to do binding and the tool helps to cut so that the joining at the end looks great, but now I have to do it without....Drat! I remember several members posted some neat ways they do the joining that looks great and without the tool too! But I can't seem to find those posts. So can anyone help? A tute or link to same would be great. Please help. I really want to finish this quilt today. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

You can just turn under the edges of your binding and then tuck one tail inside the other. This works well, but is just a tad more bulky than the usual mitred finish:

Lay new piece perpendicular to the old piece and sew on the diagonal to create a bias seam

You can do a diagonal seam, and the only thing you need to remember is that the two ends should overlap by how wide your binding is. In other words, if you cut your binding 2.5" wide, then have the ends overlap by 2.5". If you cut it 3", then the ends should overlap 3". After you cut the ends, turn them 90 degrees, stitch the diagonal seam, and you're good to go.
