Thankyou so much everyone...am putting new batteries in the calculator and grabbing a fresh sheet of paper.......after breakfast...and coffee...and more coffee. Thanks all...will report back!

Ii would cut all my squares to the next whole size and trim the sewn HST units instead of fighting with the 7/8 measurement.
Example: If you wanted a "finished" 8 inch HST units - cut the squares 9 inches - sew - cut - press - and trim. I consider myself a fairly accurate sewer - but when I use the X-7/8 inch measurement to cut a square - those HST units almost always end up skimpy. I'd much rather trim off a smidgen than be skimpy! |
I just wanted to point out that there's more than one way to skin a cat. You can make a chevron quilt without having to deal with bias and triangles. :)

Well DUH!! Thanks for the link Peckish. That method is so much easier than all those pesky HSTs! And I'll bet it takes less fabric and time too!!
|
Right then I've sorted out what my problem was. Basically, I was working out my fabric quantity correctly...was delighted to follow all your instructions and realise that my method was the same......however, whilst I worked out my fabric requirements for the 8" chevrons accurately, I actually had inadvertently added my extra fabric requirements for the smaller chevrons........wait for it...........twice! aaaarrrrrgggghhhhhh! And now, after all this self imposed angst and headache I've decided I would prefer to do the larger chevrons as I'll have more room in them for quilting. sigh..always was one for coming at things the long way around! Thanks again everyone; I really appreciate everyones' input and advice.

Thanks, Peckish. What a revelation.
