Hi again just broke my second walking foot the only thing I can think of is the lever that raises and lowers the foot rests on top of the walking foot sometimes when I stop and start it has to be moved out of the way before i can begin sewing again. Here is a picture. Is it supposed to sit there like that? If not is there a remedy here?

littlehud 05-10-2010 07:14 PM

That sure doesn't look right to me. Are you sure this is the right foot for your machine.

Holice 05-10-2010 07:15 PM

I suggest consulting a dealer of the foot about the problem. I do't understand the reason that "it has to be moved aside" before it will work......I don't believe I have ever heard of a walking foot breaking. Do you have a machine dealer close by that you can take it in to. What machine do yu have and is it a machine specific walking foot.

sharon b 05-10-2010 07:21 PM

Doesn't look right to me either. The lever should always be out of the way of the walking foot . And maybe I missed it but I didn't see the bar that attaches to the screw for the walking foot. Does that make sense ?

ConnieF 05-10-2010 10:07 PM

I am with Littlehud, Are you sure it is the right one for your machine. Right brand and if it is a straight needle or a slant needle machine will also make a difference.

Those are not cheep so I'd double check before trying another one... Good luck
Connie

I just don't see how that can be the correct walking foot for your machine. The presser foot lever should not be interfering at all with the walking foot. You may have a machine that does not do well with a generic walking foot, in which case you will need to get a walking foot made specifically for your machine.

It would help if we knew make and model of yur machine. If you can, step back a bit and get a couple more pics from a couple of angles.
You can also ask Charlee or Billy who are fairly knowledgeable on machines.

Joe 05-11-2010 03:19 AM

It's a brother vx 1120 yes they were both generic walking feet. The closest sewing machine shop is about 1 1/2 hour drive. The lever is attached to the needle screw like its supposed to be. I should try taking it to a dealer. Thanks everybody.

sewcrafty 05-11-2010 03:33 AM

From the walking feet I've seen, the lever on the right by the screw, usually sits on top of the screw. Or they have the kind with the end that looks like a fork that goes onto the screw shaft.

That doesn't look right at all to me. I know with my Janome I cannot use a thumb screw in order to attach the walking foot to the shank. I have to use a regular screw as the thumb screw hits the walking foot.

I ended up finding a generic low shank walking foot at Joann's that I have no problem with. My one for the Janome cost $33.00, the generic was only $15.00 plus if you use a 40% off coupon, it brings it down to under $10.00. But again, this is for a low shank and I can't see what yours is.

The grey bar on the right is your lever to lift your foot, correct? Right next to that is a silver bar that is sitting BELOW the screw that holds your needle, correct? If I am seeing your picture correct as above you need to put the silver bar ON TOP of the screw that holds your needle. That part is what makes your walking foot, 'walk'. I know it seems odd, but check it out and you shall be surprised. To put it on correct, lift the pressure foot so the grey bar is out of the way before you finagle the silver bar over the screw, then screw down the walking foot. The grey bar should not sit on top of the walking foot, but next to it.

I agree I have a brother se 350 and I bought my walking foot at jo-anns with 50% off coupon I paid $7.50 and it works great on my machine. I figure if it does break I can afford to buy another one. and the fork has't to go over the the screw arm that holds your needle in. works great.

so the fork has to go on top of the screw that holds the needle in? If that's the case then that may be my problem. It just seemed so logical that the forked part would go right on the screw itself not above it but I have very little experience sewing which is why i asked the experts here on this forum. Thanks I'll buy another one at jo-anns and see if that helps. BTW mine is a low shank machine.

sewingladydi 05-11-2010 06:24 PM

I think CoyoteQuilts is right. I have a Viking and a Kenmore and both have that little silver metal bar that goes above the screw.

Your drop lever still looks real close to the walking foot , Is it ?

drivingsusan 05-12-2010 02:02 PM

It goes OVER (above) the screw as in the first picture, not surrounding the screw as in the second (which is the way it looks like it should!)

yes it still gets hooked on the top of the foot

nativetexan 05-12-2010 03:48 PM

that lever or bar has to go on top of the screw that holds in your needle. so when the needle and shaft move up and down, the walking foot will work correctly.

nativetexan 05-12-2010 03:49 PM

ah the pics of the new foot works fine. the forked thing goes on the screw and away you go. great!

JanetM 05-12-2010 04:24 PM

It should look like the second picture...hugging the screw that holds in your needle. Give it a test run okay?

I may be wrong, my answer was based on how my walking foot attaches. Your presser foot lever definately looks like it will get hung up on it no matter which way you attach it. Have you tried going to the website for your particular machine? Maybe you can't use a generic walking foot. I would ask them.

If you give me your machine make and model I will try to find out for you.

nursie76 05-12-2010 04:35 PM

The walking foot for most of the machine I have had look like in the second pic. I agree that your problem seems to be the grey, up/down lever. I am sure that must bump the foot as it moves. I agree, check with a dealer.

It's a Brother VX 1120 I don't think the lever is supposed to come down that close to the foot maybe some sort of stop is missing inside the machine.

JanetM 05-12-2010 06:51 PM

Hi Joe,

Okay, I am totally confused. I did a search and am finding conflicting information as to which walking foot works on your VX-1120. One site says you need the SA-140, but another says that does not work on your model.

If you call Brother tomorrow I think they may be able to clear things up. I suggest that you tell them that you have tried a generic walking foot and the presser foot lever is hitting it. In looking at pictures your lever looks okay to me, so there must be a thin, low profile walking foot that would clear it.

Their customer support team is available at:

I am very frustrated that I couldn't solve your problem . I would have called Brother myself, but it was too late. Please let us know what they say, okay?

Joe 05-12-2010 07:37 PM

I will let you know thanks again

CoyoteQuilts 05-20-2010 09:53 PM

The second pic. What I am most concerned about it your lever to lift your foot. It seems to sit on top of the back of your walking foot. Does it interfere with the walking foot itself? My suggestion is to not thread the needle and turn your wheel slowly and watch all the parts of the walking foot and make sure there isn't to much pressure on the back of the walking foot from your pressure foot lever. The walking foot should 'walk' by one section up., moving forward and one section down moving back. The section that is down should be hitting your feed dogs and 'gripping' your fabric. If there is a gap then the pressure foot lever is putting to much pressure on the back of the walking foot.

I sure hope this explanation is a lot clearer than mud :).

Hi Joe,
Did you ever contact Brother about you walking foot trouble. I'm curious as to what you found out. :D

It turns out there is something wrong with my presser foot lever I have to take it apart and figure out what is causing it to travel over so far as to interfere with the foot. Haven't had time to do that yet but will keep you posted. May have to take it in for repair or just buy a new one this model is probably ten years old and it would probably not cost much more to replace it then to fix it.

JanetM 05-25-2010 08:24 AM

Maybe it is time for a new machine. That wouldn't be so bad, huh? Keep us posted. :D

BellaBoo 05-25-2010 08:46 AM

It's probably a set screw that became loose and fell out. Go ahead and take a look inside. It may be an easy fix and then you'll have a back up machine when you buy the new one.
