Hi , I am new to quilting . I am making a scrappy nine patch quilt. The unfinished blocks are 91/2 " . How do you cut the fill- in triangles ? I know you cut the plain squares same size as blocks , but don't know how to do the triangles . All help would be appreciated ! Or if there is a site with formulas for different sizes.

The following link was provided not long ago by some wonderful member here who's name I can't remember right now to give credit to. Sorry! But here's a link that has the type of formula you're looking for. :)

I think I saw on simply quilts how to do this but forgot to save a copy . That wasn't too smart ! Trial and error , that's me too ! Same here , lots of errors ! But I keep on trying .
I want to try stainglass pattern , but not sure about trying to apply those tiny strips ! Have you tried one ? I have some nice patterns I got online. Happy stitching / quilting Ann |
Can't remember where I saw this, but they suggested using a companion angle ruler to cut the triangles. When JoAnn's had the quilting notions on sale for 50% off or I get a 50% off coupon, I buy up different types of rulers. With the companion ruler you cut your trianles from strips of fabric. On the angled sides of the ruler it will give the finished triangle base size and down the center the size of the strips to use.
So for a 4" finished square for example, the strips would be 2 1/2". Sure made things much easier than cutting a lot of squares. |

http://www.robertkaufman.com/quilting/ask_margrit_fall_2006/ I never would have thought of looking at fabric designers' websites for info. Thought they only would show new fabrics (and make me want to buy more!) Wendy |
