Last year I saw a stunning batik quilt at a LQS. It was part of a traveling display & was so simple I thought I could make it without any problems so I didn't take any pictures. It was simply strips of batiks sewn together, then cut into squares and set on point. I think the strips were narrower than a Bali Pop jelly roll. I did try to buy a pattern but the owner didn't have it or know where I could find it. Soooo, what size strips do y'all think would be best? I am thinking cutting 2" strips but would love some input. I plan on making this with all shades of blues, greens, aquas and some purples to give the feel of an ocean watercolor. Thanks!!

How big will the quilt be? 2" strips will finish up to 1.5" squares, which for me would be pretty small. If I were going to do this on a bed size quilt (twin or larger), I would probably cut 2-1/2" strips, which would finish to 2" squares. I'm thinking the quilt shop owner likely used precut strips for her quilt, which would be another indication that 2.5" would be okay.

If the stripes were horizontal in the finished quilt, then the squares were cut ON POINT from the stripped strata.

I think the width of the strips and number of strips in a block would correlate to the size of block you wanted. How many colors/fabrics, how many strips, desired size of block.

The strips were vertical when finished on point. The blocks looked to be about 10" sq. It's hard to say since it was hanging up near the ceiling. It does make sense that it was made from a jelly roll.... It will be a large lap quilt, and have many different fabrics all in the cool family. I plan on it being quite random in block placement; not matchy, matchy if you know what I mean.

Same thing. They were cut from the strata ON POINT.

Sounds very cool and relatively easy. I love when the fabric does all the work.
And the strips don't really have to be the same size.
