I am working on a quilt for Quilts of Valor. They give the kit and the instructions they want used. It is in red, white and blue, but some of the fabrics are not to my taste. But, I'm determined to do it anyway.
They use Eleanor Burns Quick Trip Around the World as the starting pattern. Since it is on a typed sheet, I don't know if it is her exact method or not. Here is why I am uncomfortable. They do not want it pressed until it is completed. All seams are to go down, which makes a very thick seam. I have the strips all together in a tube and cut into 2 1/2 inch strips. Now it says to cut the strips in half (where the fabrics change and move up). Each strip moves up by 1/2. If I cut a piece off with a rotary cutter, I could throw off the seam allowance. If I use scissors, I could cut it crooked. Is this what the original pattern calls for? Has anyone ever done it this way? Any suggestions? |
Took a class at LQS they told us to seam-rip.

Hve you watched her video on that quilt? http://www.quiltinaday.com/theater/3100/3101.html
I didn't know QOV furnished the kits like the Downy quilt for kids. |

I've done this quilt Eleanor Burns style. Yes this is the way she said to do it. I used scissors and it worked fine.

Well I just watched the video and she does iron everything down! And uses scissors! The instructions I have don't mention that every other strip is cut at the seam line and alternates with the 1/2 cut. It makes it seem like they are all cut in 1/2. So I'm off to finish this one. Thanks for the help!

Cute quilt. I like the idea of doing this one for QOV!

I watched her show where she did a couple of these. She just used scissors on the seams and to cut the squares in half. Where you are cutting is the edge so it was ok.
