After Mom was no longer able to sit for any length of time without her feet up, she would sit every evening in her recliner cutting out quilt pieces. I am left with mostly 2 1/2 inch squares but some 4 inch squares - stacks of them. She has them all mixed up as to cross grain and lengthwise grain and it's taking me some time to get them all going the same way. I am also finding she cut some of the squares not quite on the grain and even a few on the bias.
I am planning on making up all these squares into simple scrappy square quilts and my question is should I just combine all these cuts and not worry about which way they go or should I at least kull the bias squares so my quilts will not turn out too wonky??? Would it help to cut up lots of squares of muslin cut properly to go behind each square, or am I just asking for trouble doing this??? Thank you for any input you are able to give. :thumbup: |
I am thinking, and I am not that experienced, that you can sew them any which way. You will be quilting over the blocks and that will keep all the areas straight. If I am wrong, I apologize. :) But I would sew them into blocks and now worry over it.

What she said!! I've never worried about the bias, I always just go at it.

I am doing a scrappy multi-colored quilt for my DIL and using 2" squares. I have been taking from my scraps and scraps donated to me. With squares this small, I don't worry about bias or straight of grain. Once they are all combined into blocks, mine appear to be stable. And especially when they are quilted, I am confident they will be ok. Just my opinion. Others may feel differently.

I hate to say I don't mind that I don't mind bias, but I don't with small cuts!

However.......if you are not sure they are all cut accurately, I would make a template from plastic the finished size and use that to make seam marks on the square so at least the finished squares would be accurate. This will take a bit of time in marking/measuring and doing some pinning but I believe you will be more pleased with the outcome. Don't worry about grain/bias. That small a size won't matter. Just measure as you go along and press to get them to lay as flat as possible and maintain the correct size. Scrappy is what you will get and it will be delightful when finished.

With pieces that small bias might not be that much of a problem, but if you're worried about it maybe starch them first so that they don't stretch.
