Need Help on Stablizers and embroidery thread
 

Hey y'all,

i just recently purchased a Brother PE-780D embroidery machine. Now i need a lesson or two in stablizers and embroidery thread. So please share your priceless knowledge and experience with a novice to embroidery.

i guess my questions are... is there a go to stablizer? thickness? wash away? tear away?
then for thread.... i was told rayon 40wt was the best to use.... so what do you use? what brand?

i know white bobbins, so i was told, do you buy prewound bobbins? make your own? what type / weight?

yea I know but any info you are will to share to help me get started will be greatly appreciated!

Do you have a local shop where you can take lessons? I've only been embroidering for a year and have taken many lessons at my local shop where I bought my machine. The other place that has great ttutorials is Emblibrary.com

Your machine will most likely use the 90 wt bobbin thread. It is lighter weight than 60. So be watchful for that. On the prewounds you will have to be sure of the weight and the size bobbin it is to fit your machine. I buy most of my embroidery thread from Metro metroem.net I've had good service and the thread works well in my Brother. I got 144 prewounds for 29.99 - They work great in my machine, but I use the 60 wt thread in mine. As far as stabilizer, I use solvy on top, and tear away on bottom. Not always together, just if what I'm working on is more dense and needs it.

stabilizers depend on what you are embroidering. if you go to emblibrary.com they have a lot of useful information. all I now from my experience is tearaway is only for really stable fabrics. haven't used much of it because of the puckers I have only used it for monogramming less dense letters. I have used cutaway medium weight, and cutaway no show mesh the most. I have water soluble toppers for towels but haven't got there yet.

I bought prewounds because I find the embroidery bobbin thread spools for brother to be expensive and they don't provide many bobbins. its cheaper to go the prewound route. mine uses 60wt not sure where you can find 90wt ones.

thread poly fades less, and is more durable, good for clothing and items going to be laundered frequently, and from what I hear it shreds less. Rayon is more vibrant, but fades and is not colorfast so not good for laundering. its your choice depending on the look you are going for and how it will be used

I am a newbie as of september and my learning has been really trial and error. emblibrary has a lot if information on hooping, stabilizer, troubleshooting. sewforum.com has an embroidery forum that have many people that can answer any questions you may have.

I get Isacord and Robison Anton poly (rayon is a no no for me) from discountembroiderysupply.com. Best prices and no shipping charge. Great fast service. The absolutely best thread is Magnifico by Superior. I only buy it in a few most used colors because the cones are huge, but it is wonderful.

Mostly I use a water soluble stabilizer - various brands like OESD or Sulky. For threads I have collected Sulky and Madeira threads - definitely use poly for it's strength and how well it washes and maintains color.

I use Isacord thread. It works really well on my Bernina. It is what my sewing shop recommended when I bought it.

As far as thread; different ones for different things. I use rayon the most, then there is polyester which is good if something will be washed alot but it doesn't hold up to heat as well, it will melt. I've even used cotton thread, depending on what I was making. Rayon and polyester has a nice shine to them. When making FSL baskets and ornaments I also used the serger cone thread but that did take me a while to figure out which needle and what stabilizer worked the best for it. Now it stitches out so nice without any breakages. The bobbins will depend on your machine, I normally use the same thread in the top and bobbin to eliminate any issues. These things have worked well for me for the past few years so good luck and keep asking questions, that's the only way to learn.

Oh, and as for brand off thread, I use them all. My machine isn't finicky and works just as well with one as the other. My advice is just try them and see. My machine self adjusts its own tension so I never have to worry about that.
