I want to know how you guys set up your quilts to bast them? I usually use sray basting and that works good but how do you have enough space to do it? Having trouble finding a place big enough for the quilt. Please help!!!!!!!

I don't spray but I use a table that I bought at Joann's and I just move the quilt around since the table isn't big enough for a whole quilt.

I baste mine on a wall. I cover my wall with duck cloth then pin my backing to the wall nice and tight. This works really great for me because I don't have a very big space to do the basting on the floor or table. The down fall is that the floor gets awefully sticky.

Some quilt shops and/or fabric stores have classrooms that you can use. Just a thought...

I go to my church's fellowship hall. I protect everything and spray baste. I use tables so I don't have to do hands and knees:)

Before I got my longarm I would move the dinning room furniture into the living room, mob the floor and then lay the quilt sandwich on the floor to pin baste it. It wasn't fun, but got the job done ---- and my floors cleaned!

this is the best way I've ever seen - google Sharon Schambers Basting and you will be amazed at the simplicity of her technique - I have tried it on my most recent, a king sized quilt and it works!!!

I use pins, not the spray stuff. I just center the whole "sandwich" on my table, and then move it twice until the whole thing is pinned. Works. Isn't easy or quick, but it works.

I used the conference table where I work... I too covered it all and then taped it to the table and worked away.

Did it afterhours the spray wouldn't bother anyone...never could smell it because it's such a big room.

I spray baste with June Tailors spray. I work on my deck, putting down a large sheet, lay the backing down and then the batting. Smooth it all down and then fold back the batting at the middle. With my shoes off, I walk up to the end and on the batting I folded back and spray that half of the batting. Then pick up the batting and start walking forward until I get it back where it should go. then do the other end and the top the same way.
Don't have to get on hand and knees much that way.

I never spray baste, only because I don't like the fumes. I have a 60" sq table that I drape the quilt over and use safety pins to baste. I then move it around on the table and the draping sections put enough tension on the quilt to keep it nice and smooth. I have never had any problems with pleats or puckers doing this way. Not only that, but, I am not crawling around on the floor and it is alittle easier on the back.

watterstide, thanks for the link and your pic. I never thought about doing it on the wall. What a great idea and i have a big empty wall in my sewing room I can use.
I use to take them to a fellowshiph hall to do it. Now I can stay home.

watterstide 05-20-2011 02:28 AM

your welcome! i am going to try a 90 x 80 on the wall today. i may need help, holding it up first!
with this big one, i may spray the bottom half first, then do the top. pressing it in the center section first..
make sure your backing and batting is alot bigger than the quilt, like you would need it for a long-armer..to avoid having to repositioning it to much.

once it is up,and secure..then i cut off the excess..the less i have to get under the machine arm, (janome 6600) the better!

HI!! I TOOK ONE OF MINE TO THE LIBRARY CONFERENCE ROOM TO LAY OUT. USED SAFETY PINS TO BASTE IT TOGETHER. I JUST NEEDED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO USE THE ROOM. AS LONG AS YOU HAVE A LIBRARY CARD THERE WAS NO PROBLEM. THEN I LEARNED I COULD USE THE HALL & TABLES AT OUR CHURCH, WHICH WAS EVEN BETTER!!!! IF I DO IT AT HOME, I HAVE TO CLEAR A BIG SPACE ON THE FLOOR, WHICH IS A PAIN WITH MY BAD KNEES. I DON'T USE SPRAY BASTING AS IT TENDS TO GUM UP MY NEEDLE & IS EXPENSIVE.

MelodyWB 05-21-2011 07:46 AM

I use spray clue by Elmer's..less expensive and less fumes..water base..go out on my patio on a big glass table!! I live in Az..if it's too hot..I have done it inside..and it's not bad!!

watterstide 05-21-2011 08:46 AM

i m trying to get the tables at the community center...i have 2 of these tshirts to pin, spray baste or whatever.

i have had 2 knee replacements in the past 6 months..so no kneeling for me..!

i was wondering how the spray elmers glue would work..they carry it t joanns. where all the glues are kept, not by the quilting stuff..
