Need help
My son is graduating from Law School in May and I need help choosing a pattern for a quilt. Any suggestions? I am not a fast quilter and really want to have it done for graduation so I would need to complete it by the end of April. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Jean,
I was wondering if any of the tutorials below would be of any help? They are all simple patterns and look like they can be completed quite quickly? I hope this helps. Best of luck for getting it done by May. Let us know how you get on. http://www.quiltingboard.com/tutoria...lt-t44258.html http://www.quiltingboard.com/tutoria...ck-t92447.html http://www.quiltingboard.com/tutoria...22-t40144.html - Disappearing 9 patch :) |
One that I like and is easy ~ http://www.quiltmaker.com/patterns/d...html?idx=5185_
If it was me I would look for some "law" type fabric or man-ly as my focal fabric. |

Log cabin is fast, did one in a month only working on it intermittently.

I just printed one out today from Quilt-Pro Systems block of the day called Bachelor's Puzzle that you might like. I know you are so proud of your son. My DSIL finished law school a year ago this past May and was lucky enough to get a good job on his first interview. I wish the same luck for your Son.

This is called Barrister's Block or Lawyer's Puzzle.

how about courthouse steps?
|
What wonderful suggestions. I knew I could depend on fellow quilters. I'll keep you apprised as I go along. My biggest obstacle is that I work 60 hours a week (and sometimes more). But I am determined. Who needs sleep anyway?

I pick bargello quilts for the male college grads. It modern , no girly implications. I use batiks for male grads as well, again no girly implications. They really are not hard it's just sewing strip sets together.
This is one I made for my nephew. http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...a-t181266.html |
Many years ago a friend used this pattern to make a quilt for her son who also had graduated from law school....so appropriate! How exciting for your son!

I think someone posted a Court House Steps quilt on here that she had made for her son who was graduating frrom law school. I think that is a great idea. I'm not good at doing searches on here, but hopefully you might be able to find it. Congratulations to your son and to you. You must be so proud of him.

When my son graduated from law school I gave him a quilt made of court house steps blocks ...it's a variation of log cabin. I did an applique of the justice scales for the center block. And he loved it!!

Here is a link to a tube quilt tutorial from Missouri Star http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOWSp0mTTqE It is a fast & easy quilt to make.
|
Court house steps, and if you look up military material (Google) they some beautiful designs there. How proud you must be!!!
|
All suggestions are good but how about a Rail Fence you know all the BARS as in passing the Bar - just my kind of humor.
|
Look up the quilt block for laywers...the barrister block..picking good colors makes a beautiful quilt.
|
Great suggestions, another one I have seen "looks like a bookshelf with books standing, leaning, and some laying down on bookshelves" and then printing on the names of some of the books he has utilized in his studies. The bookshelf look could be made using cherrywood looking fabric, with cream/burgundy colored books and gold/black printing.....just food for thought!

Congrats to your son! A lot of great suggestions here. WOW, 60+ hours a week doesn't leave you much time or energy I bet.
|
So many options! What wonderful ideas. I need to figure this out ASAP. Thanks got all your help. I'll keep you apprised.

Well, if you want to prepare him for the real world, I (legal secretary for over 40 years) would suggest that you make a "Robbing Peter to Pay Paul" quilt. http://www.quilterscache.com/R/RobPe...PaulBlock.html

Jean do you have family in New Jersey? My maiden mane is Nagy.
|
HAven't read all the comments, but if he's a lawyer...what about "Courthouse Steps?"

http://quilterscache.com/B/BarristersBlock.html This magazine contains a nice pattern from Lone Star: http://lonestarhouseofquilts.com/ind...oducts_id=7171 I did one of their BoM quilts with similar blocks called Lady of the Lake. I used Triangulations papers to keep the HSTs perfectly sized from one month to the next. Those papers are little miracles for HSTs and QSTs - anything triangular was my nemesis until I bought Triangulations. :) |
Oh I love that barrister's block

I've seen fabric that looks like money, and also fabric that looks like books on a shelf. You could add pinstripes and maybe plaids and solid blues and other masculine fabrics. Maybe you could find stripes on a diagonal, like ties. There is also graduation fabric, with the hats being thrown in the air. I like the courthouse steps patterns, too, but I might cut the pieces at 2.5 or 3 inches wide.
|
Courthouse Square, Barrister's Block or Courthouse Steps would be good. Congratulations on your son's achievement.
|
How about the Big Star quilt. Missouri Star has a video & Jennie's block finishes at 25". She also shows a nice way to set them.
I just finished one for my oldest son's 42nd birthday and believe me they were fast. I used flannel as the batting. Like Jennie I sewed the squares into 4 rows, then I did a sort of QAYG method where I sewed down my middle sashing strip to the flannel only & then worked like that to the top & then bottom. Best wishes & good luck. Congratulations on your son's graduation. |
Yesterday I did the 5Min. quilt blocks; In 2 hrs. I made 56 blocks, used just 2 colors for a quilt 7 across,8down my blocks were 8x8. Iam considering making a ribbon border for it when I get a chance to do so. I have spend today on the computer checking all the ads in my email box and now on the quilting board. Have so many ads I have to spend a day to go thru and get rid of most of them and find the ones I want to read and answer. The 10Min. blocks would be good to.;

Log cabin, That's a great man quilt. ....:)
|
Courthouse Steps in his favorite colors - batiks, maybe, would be my choice. I also think Tradewinds has a masculine feel to it in muted batiks.
Edit to add the link: http://www.hoffmanfabrics.com/EDocs/...ern%20blue.pdf |
So many choices. Thanks so much to all who offered suggestions. I like the idea of Civil War fabrics and I love batiks. Still thinking.........
