I make aprons for a local restuarant and one of the gals had a pen leak...really bad...any suggestions as how to get the ink out? I would really appreciate the help!

bkb 12-16-2010 04:39 PM

HAIRSPRAY will work it will take a lot though

KatFish 12-16-2010 04:40 PM

Hair spray works but someone might know of something else that works better.

Beginner64 12-16-2010 04:41 PM

You might possibly try using hair spray to get the ink out. I think I might have herd that some where. If that doesn't work try Googling to find different ideas. Hope that helped you out.

Cyn 12-16-2010 04:44 PM

Hope it comes out for you!

koko 12-16-2010 05:31 PM

Rubbing alcohol works well too. Dab from the outermost part of the stain towards the center, otherwise it gets bigger. Have some clean white paper towels underneath the stain so it will absorb whatever blots through.

quiltingbee12 12-16-2010 05:47 PM

I echo the above posts - what about doing a google search as well?

lovingmama 12-16-2010 06:23 PM

How about Gramma's Spot remover, I think that's the name of it. Usualy you can get it at Hancock's fabric stores.

fleurdelisquilts.com 12-16-2010 06:26 PM

Here's Heloise's idea for ink stains:

Ballpoint-Ink Stain
THEN: Hairspray
NOW: Rubbing alcohol
Ink formulations, fabrics, and hairspray ingredients have changed today. To get rid of the ballpoint ink from clothing you launder, place the garment on a towel stain-side down. Lightly dampen a cloth with rubbing alcohol and gently dab (do not rub) the stain.

nativetexan 12-16-2010 07:04 PM

if nothing works, soak in Oxy clean

Karen 12-16-2010 07:10 PM

Thank you all so much...I told her I would try, now maybe I can actually get it done!

amma 12-16-2010 07:56 PM

Yeah, the hairspray them make now doesn't remove it like the older cheap stuff used too... :D:D:D

sewwhat85 12-16-2010 07:58 PM

ditto on the hairspray aresol works best used to use it on my nurses aid uniform pockets wash as usual after

nursie76 12-16-2010 07:59 PM

Alcohol has always worked for me. Just put layers of paper towels underneath, and replace them frequently, don't freak out when it spreads a little, then blot, blot, blot. Then I always put Lestoil on it and wash it, but it is hard to find Lestoil any more, so I also have used color safe bleach when I wash it.

illinois 12-17-2010 05:04 AM

Alcohol has worked for me but I think it depends on how severe the ink blot is.

An applique?

Maybe the cook will trade aprons??

If all else fails, a pair of scissors!

deema 12-17-2010 05:18 AM

Yep, rubbing alcohol. I'm a lab tech and part of my job is staining blood smears with dark purple, blue and or red stains. They WILL NOT wash out. One time I dropped the bottle of crystal violet (dark dark purple)and it splashed all over my beige pants. Alcohol got it out, no problem. Never left a mark. :)

PolkaBabe 12-17-2010 08:10 AM

I have used strong solution of oxyclean in hot water & let it soak. A couple of years ago I had a piece of silk chamause - white at that - someone used black magic marker on it. Did this solution, kept working at it & also left it just soak for 24 hrs. Yeah it all came out.

stitchofclass2 12-17-2010 08:12 AM

Hair spray is great, however, my grandson (when he was about 5) marked all his "collector" nascars with permanent pen. I used Avon's Skin So Soft. Took it right out. Don't know if it will work on fabric. Skin So Soft is an amazing product. If you Google it you can find tons of uses for it. Good luck.

quiltilicious 12-17-2010 09:02 AM

carbona makes a formula specific for ink, if these other suggestions don't work for you.

mammab 12-17-2010 10:57 AM

Might also try acetone(as in nail polish remover) to get out a lot of the ink, then the alcohol/hairspray.

grannypat7925 12-17-2010 01:11 PM

Strong solution of Oxyclean.

Our Dollar General carries Lestoil sometimes!!

My sister is a nurse and she says peroxide.

dreamer2009 12-17-2010 03:03 PM

a few weeks back some one on this board advised me to get the ink off a vintage quilt...alchol rubbing spread the ink and they said to get "Spot Shot" rug cleaner.
WORKED like a charm...BIG ink spot gone.

Karen 12-17-2010 04:40 PM

I have the apron soaking, because it had been rubbed with soap and water before I got it back. I will just keep trying different things suggested until it is gone! Big thanks to all of you! MERRY CHRISTMAS!

jojosnana 12-17-2010 05:25 PM

Aqua Net HairSpray is the best because it is cheap and does not have a lot of other additives. I used it on my GD jacket - white and sprayed and blotted, sprayed and blotted and it came out.

VernaL 12-17-2010 06:05 PM

A long time ago, I read about using buttermilk. It was ballpoint pen on a shirt. I think I laid the spot over a dish and poured buttermilk over it. I left it until the buttermilk dried and an raised up the spot out of the shirt. It worked. If all else fails, you might try it or try a google on using buttermilk.

Try Spot Shot from Wal-Mart. My husband put our ink jet printer on my carpet once when we were re-arranging the room. When he picked it up the next day printer ink had soaked into my light gray carpet. And it soaked all night like that. I was very panicked and asked a friend who worked at a carpet store what they used and she recommended Spot Shot. It took all the ink out of my carpet by me just dabbing it with a wash cloth. And I used it in my son's room where there were spots of "I don't know what?!" that I had never been able to get out and it took everything out of the carpet. Some of those stains were a few years old! I love Spot Shot. It comes in an aerosol and a spray bottle. Hope this helps...

Annz 12-17-2010 09:00 PM

hairspray and rubbing alcohol spraying and rubbing from the outside in with something to blot the liquids.

Aqua Net is cheaper and for nothing else, the Best hairspray to use for ink. Spray it on and let dry, then respray once more and let dry for cotton. Polyester such as nursing uniforms(white) do not require 2 sprays , just one good spray and let dry. Other brands do not work as well, I have no cluewhy, but have tried others. Make sure you purchase this brand in an aerosol can. The pump sprays have been reformulated and do not work as well. Wear a cheap mask or cover nose or spray outside if the aerosol bothers you or have breathing problems.

IBQUILTIN 12-17-2010 10:07 PM

There s a product at Home Depot called Krud Kutter that should also take it out, stain side down on old towel, spray and blot till stain is gone,

GailG 12-18-2010 02:42 AM

My DH used Off repellent to remove Sharpie permanent marker letters. It also removed black paint (with quite a bit of elbow grease). I've got to wonder if that stuff is good for our skin. Yikes.

Rann 12-18-2010 09:01 PM

The old hairspray had alcohol and the new does not. Alcohol is the secret.

skydiver70 12-18-2010 09:03 PM

Several years ago, I got some ink marks on a polyester (dates me doesn't it?) dress and couldn't get it out with anything. Then I tried Shout. I poured some on the spot and rubbed it in real good, let it set awhile and then washed it. All the ink came out. Might try that.

tryitall 12-31-2010 07:33 PM

Yep! Hair spray.
