I would like to create a themed quilt for my mom who just passed away on Memorial Day. She was Italian. I want to be fun and reflect who she was.
Where can I begin.? Obviously, this material will be hard to find....I think.

Welcome from Ireland.

My condolences on the loss of your mother.

Think about your mom and make a list of all the things you remember that she loved. I would probably try to include favorite hobbies, flowers, foods, and vacation spots. There are tons of novelty fabrics available so it shouldn't be too hard to find plenty of great fabrics. (Well, it could be hard on the pocketbook.)

What will you do with this quilt? Will it be a comfort quilt for you, or a wall quilt? Please post your progress. This sounds like a very comforting project to work through your sorrow. Bless you.

I agree...find fabric that when you see it, it says "Mom"
My sympathy for your loss. I lost mine 3 yrs ago and i still
find myself reaching for the phone to call her! The quilt project will be a great healing tool for you. Hope to see the pics when you finish!!!

Hi and welcome from Texas.
As for your Italian theme, maybe some tomatoes and wine for starters???
You might check Bearpaw Quilting.com online for themed fabrics, and get some better ideas??

Hello and welcome from Ontario. So sorry for the loss of your mother. I like the idea of making list of things that you remember about her and that make you think of her and finding fabrics that represent each item on your list. It will have a great deal of meaning and it might be a little less painful than if you were to use actual pictures, etc. so soon after your loss.

lovequilts 06-20-2010 03:46 PM

Do you have any of her clothing? you could use that in your quilt. I made a quilt for a friend who's son was killed out of his clothing and she wanted his ties in it. I use the ties for sashing and the binding. Use the memories.

CeeJay100 06-20-2010 03:48 PM

That is a good idea. I am afraid I will be all over the place with this. She was so talented. But it is a place to start. Thank you.

CeeJay100 06-20-2010 03:50 PM

Once I sort out material, I can incorporate some of her clothing in it as well. My friend Pat did one for her daughter out of her husband's flannel shirts. Quite the piece and handsewn as well.

CeeJay100 06-20-2010 03:52 PM

I am new at this so I quess it will take a while to do.

Welcome from a former Washingtonian. One of my sons lives in Gig Harbor and my husband grew up on Fox Island. Beautiful country where your warm quilts will be well used.

Welcome, waving from Indiana, USA

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss, take care

do you have any of her clothes, that you could cut up to make a quilt (hankies to use to decorate) like for a crazy quilt pattern, charms etc. on the quilt, also photographs, maybe a recipe that was written by her to put on a fabric block, etc.

amma 06-24-2010 06:10 AM

My deepest condolences on the loss of your Mother. My Mom passed away 4 years ago.
Whatever quilt you decide to make will be a beautiful loving tribute to your Mother.
The first quilt I ever made was a tribute to my Mom and the family tradition she created around the Thanksgiving Holiday. It was a Thanksgiving Tree from freepatterns.com

I know someone that made a memory quilts from her dad's shirts that were appliqued as maple leafs onto a white background. It was really nice and she said it helped her with her healing process.

Good luck on your project.

redrummy 06-24-2010 06:51 AM

welcome from central Ohio. Sorry for your loss, I too have lost my mom and it is hard. I made a memory quilt for a woman who's son died. He went to college in Mich. so I used material in those colors, and used photos. I found it easy, and she loved it.

thimblebug6000 06-24-2010 07:07 AM

I made a quilt for my DH so it's not really a memory quilt but I'll describe the things I put on and maybe this will help with your list. In the center block I appliquéd 2 wedding bands & embroidered Families are Forever; other blocks are - a German flag; a Berlin flag; a Canadian flag; a ship; 2 eagle blocks; an appliquéd bike; an appliquéd barbell set. To show where he was born - where he chose to move to - what his favourite things are.
Enjoy your healing process, a wonderful way to share your memories of your Mom.

CeeJay100 06-24-2010 10:01 PM

Hi Ama
Thank you for your help. Where did you get pic of flower? is it a poster?

CeeJay100 06-24-2010 10:03 PM

Wow wonderful to be a survivor. May God Bless You and keep you that way.

CeeJay100 06-24-2010 10:05 PM

Great, I can use the Italian flag. Did not think of that one. It helps very much to put something like a quilt together. It does make you cry though. What else is new. Thank you for sharing.C

CeeJay100 06-24-2010 10:09 PM

She was a fabulous cook. I am new to this so I do not know what a fabric block is. :D

CeeJay100 06-24-2010 10:10 PM

Thank you and Hi from Gig Harbor, WA!

quiltergirl80 06-24-2010 10:12 PM

I would start with a list of your loves and memories of her. This list may help if you are unable to find specific fabrics.
