I want to make the hunter star pattern in king size with 72 blocks and will use two colors only

I don't understand how much fabric is needed of each color. Can someone help?

It depends on how you are placing the colors. if you are doing it in the traditional way as it seems. than I would say at min I would go with three yards each. but that is kinda how much you would probably be needing if you are laying the fabric out on the bed. if you are doing any fancy cutting then you will probably need more than three each. and that doesn't include boarders or anything. it also depends on the size of your blocks too.

Back of the envelope:
assuming 72 12" blocks (which would be 288 6" blocks), king size of 98 x110, no border.

But you can definitely use multiple fabrics in each color. Much more interesting that way (I think).

(btw, EQ came up with 7.25yds)

8 x 9 blocks = 72 blocks = approx 96 x 108 inches


Using the suggested measurement of a 6x35 inch strip of each fabric for one 12-inch block -

(for 12 x 35 inches of total fabric per block )

(Assuming the 6-inch strips are cut parallel to the selvage and 6 strips cut per yard length)

I come up with 12 yards needed for EACH fabric. Which would be 24 yards. Which seems like an awful lot.

If one can cut seven 6-inch strips from the width of fabric, than it would take 11 yards of EACH fabric. 22 yards total. Which also seems like a lot.

I kept thinking I wasn't reading or understanding this pattern correctly cause it seemed like too much fabric was needed...which seems to be the case. It looks really pretty but I bet I can find another star pattern in a king size using less fabric!! Thanks for the help

I actually came out with 9 when I did it by hand (I didn't even see the recommended amounts on the qc site) , calculating that each 6" block has to start as a 9" block (lots of seam allowances).

So I went to double check in EQ, and it came up to the 7.25yds.

How about we we compromise and call it 10 yards of each color?

She's gonna need fabric for the binding and can use some for the back.

Well, yes and no.

A king size sheet by itself, just one plain piece of fabric is going to take around 8 yards of quilting fabric to make. That's without any seam allowances (obviously you have to join the yardage) but you get the idea.

So even if you start putting together Lemoyne or Ohio Star blocks, the fabric quantities start adding up. Maybe not to 16 yards, but the more pieces and intricacies in the block, the more fabric you'll use up.

That's why the background fabric requirement for the Dear Jane is 15 yards. It's all those freaking seam allowances. ;-)

I would guess 20 yards total would be a reasonable estimate. (10 yards of each color)

Those seam allowances do take up a lot of fabric.

I would rather have a bit extra, than run 2 inches short!

Main Fabric: 6 1/2 yards

Background Fabric (light) 6 1/2 yards
Border 1 1/2 yards
Binding 3/4 yard
Backing 9 yards
Batting 98 X 110

I'm understanding the Optional part is making your stars with a third color. The star would have a different dark and the same light used in all of the quilt. The quilt is a light same as what is in the star and another (different) dark fabric. Take a look at Yellow House Quilter www.yellowhousequilter.com. I used two colors and it is awesome!

I HIGHLY recommend using the Clover Double Pins they really helped with keeping the seams together. If you haven't used them before they are wonderful. I ended up getting my second set at Joanns with a coupon. They are a little more spendy but great pins!

I'll be posting a picture probably tomorrow or the next day. Take a look. I'm stumped on how to quilt it. Have fun!

i did a twin sized and used 5 yards of different colored blue/green batiks for one color and then 4-5 yards of the other color....So double that for a King sized easily.....

but that is one reason why I stick to twin sized....

I just finished making a full size hunters star in 2 colors. I used 2 yards of each color. But my block size was 24", (so each individual block was 12" to make up my total 24" block). I also did it strip piecing not paper piecing. Paper piecing patterns definitely takes alot more fabric. My quilt top is 70 x 80. By making my blocks bigger I saved alot of time and fabric. I had alot less seams that take up alot of fabric. So this should give you alot to think about before you start your top.

I have made one Hunter's Star quilt. I used the Rapid Fire Hunter's Star ruler and it was the best. You may want to look into it. I got mine at my LQS. Here is what my finished quilt looked like.

I made a scrappy hunter's star with about 45 fabrics, some 1/4 yards, some half yard pieces. The pattern/special ruler had a lot of waste.

Your scrappy rendition is beautiful!!! I LOVE planning and using scores of fabrics in a quilt.
