I'm making this quilt for a friend in the Netherlands. It is a tribute to her daughter who passed away. She chose the fabrics/colors and wants it bright.

The pix is what I have so far. I bought a stripe w/ yellow/blue/pink brights and have ordered more of the pink and purple.

Originally, I was just going to do the 9 patch, a border of stripes and call it a day. Now, I hate it. I hate the yellow and don't know where to go.

I need input from the experts...HELP!!!!!

Nor'easter, thanks for the suggestion of purple. Once I added the dark purple, it just got a life of it's own. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. It's nice to have the monkey off my back.

The final top is done.

I looks good to me........unless you want it bigger, Ithink all you need is the borders.

Well I think it is very pretty, love the design. The striped borders sound great. I know how hard it is to work on something you dont like, made one for DH that he did all the choosing, hated it from the get go but he loves it! Since your friend picked out the fabrics, all I can say is keep plugging away at it! I am sure she will love it no matter what!

If you hate the yellow, unsewit from the center and use more of the pink and purple in the background where the yellow is now. Use small amounts of yellow to offset the yellow in the center and you will probably like it better. The center is beautiful and I hope you don't change it.

I made a quilt for my dil and I hated it when I finished the top so I put it away thinking I might like it better later. So far, I don't.

I'm not usually a big fan of yellow, but that is the most beautiful yellow with the purple, it is absolutely gorgeous! If you're not happy with the amount of yellow, maybe you could do a little applique in the larger yellow areas, maybe some more hearts. But i truly truly love it, it is gorgeous, cheerful, and very sentimental looking :)

To tone down the brightness of yellow paint without making it darker, you would add its compliment, or purple. Try this: Put you quilt on a neutral surface (a beige sheet is good) and lay your purple fabric along two sides to see how that would look as the major part of the border. Maybe a narrow inner border in the pink or blue, a wider outer border in the purple, and binding in the blue or pink. I think you'll find the yellow will fade back since it is the only color from that side of the color wheel.

Also, part of the reason the yellow stands out so much now is because that is what is framing the whole thing. Once the border is on, any border, the yellow will not be the focus!

I wouldn't undo anything you've already done. It truly is lovely and your friend must have special reasons for wanting those colors for this memorial quilt. Best of luck.

I think it'll be a cool looking quilt when it's done. Using purple, alittle darker than the purple you already used, for the outside border and maybe a narrow inner border in pink would look nice.
We want to see pics when it's done.

You might hate it simply from working so intent on it. I think it's beautiful and bright is the perfect work to describe it.

Others have suggested purple, but I was thinking you could pull in more pink, so maybe something with purple and pink to go around it, pulling the eye outward?

I love the heart in the middle. You could do applique hearts in the corners or along the edges, or embroidery perhaps. The other thing I thought was maybe stars. You have created a beautiful work of art.

Your friend wants it to be bright. I love the yellow and think that if you put a border of pink next and then the purple and finish it off with the blue she will love it! Just my opinion.

I'm no expert by any means, but I really like it the way it is. I agree, all you need is a border now.

user3587 07-02-2008 04:39 PM

I'm with Barb M , I love it. I generally don't like yellow (I thinks it's because I can't wear yellow) but this is one of the brightest and cheeriest quilts I have seen. For me it makes me smile and have a good feeling. It's personal preference but I wouldn't change a thing. From where I sit you've done a great job. I love the design.

Personally, I like yellow and I really like it with blues. It's a classic color combination...maybe blues in the border would really set it off. I know when I'm mid project, my mind starts to wander and I think ugh...this isn't working...I usually do a couple of new blocks just to get side tracked a while and that's all it takes---a little break does a body good. Can't wait to see what you decide to do.

tlrnhi 07-02-2008 06:34 PM

For what it's worth? Here's my 2 cents.
I like it, I really do. I'm not a fan of yellow either, but like the others said, get the border/borders on and you'll see that it will look differently.
I think you are not liking all that yellow in there.
I think its a beautiful quilt and will be even better once it's finished!

BDor 07-02-2008 06:54 PM

I love it but think you may just be tired of working with all the yellow. I am with the others and think the border will make a big difference.
You did a great job and I know she will be thrilled with it.

I in no way shape or form am any kind of expert. Still technically a newbie at the whole quilting game (less than a year) but I see a braided type border...in the blues and purples. I think it would frame your beautiful work nicely, and pull your eye away from the yellow a bit. I'm probably wrong on the WHY I see it that way LOL...but I still think it would look nice.

It really is beautiful, it will definitely give your friend warm happy feelings of her daughter when she sees it. You're doing a fantastic job!!

Keep us posted please :)

PS I knew I'd find one here...like this one that Quilting Turtle did on Dawn's center for their Round Robin. :) (hope you don't mind me borrowing your post Tricia!)

thanks i think you will like it when you are done with itand i am sure the lady that had you make will love it

matbe some where in the design you could put the girls name in it maybe with a meander stitch

Butterflyspain 07-03-2008 02:49 AM

Julie, I think its beautiful too. But I know what you mean if its not your colour choice it does make it hard. Think like the others have said when you get your order on, it will look different again. Perhaps two different rows of the blue and purple. It would be a shame to take it apart after all that hard work. :(

The girls here told me to audition my fabrics against the quilt and sure enough it worked. They are all so clever... :D :D

It looks beautiful. Great work. I certainly wouldn't unpick ANYTHING! If you don't like it you can either A) put it away for a while and it will look better in a month, B) make another one with different colors C) donate this one D) continue to sweat and worry. I've made things that have been a struggle for me, but others really liked it. But don't unpick!

I agree with Deb G. A darker purple border will really tone down that yellow. I like it regardless!
