Need Help....what am I doing wrong?

I made these setting triangles and when I tried to sew them I realized they are not right angles...don't they need to be right angles?

Top picture is how to make the triangles. Cut 13 1/2" square. Cut that into 4ths to make triangles.

Lower pictures is how to sew them together. Shouldn't the point of the triangle that attaches to 2 squares be right angles? Mine are not. What am missing here?

I bet you cut something wrong. Was your square 13.5?

Hmmm, not having any trouble with the directions. Could you post a picture of the way you are laying it out? (No need to sew it, just lay it out). Yes, the right angle corner corner should be matched with the bottom of the row you are joining it to. Another suggestion: Cut a triangles out of paper and a few blocks out of paper and follow the directions.

Good luck!!

Your right angle is formed by the two sides that are the same length. The longer side is the outside edge of the quilt. You did it right, just take one and turn it.

I would suggest as Kitsie says and try with paper first. I think you're just having an issue with how you are positioning your triangles - provided they've been cut to the correct size. As in the diagram you provided, you'll lay out your row of blocks and then take the triangles and just keep rotating them until you get the right angles (what are actually the 'points' or 'centers' of your cut triangles facing the bottom left/right sides of the blocks. Hope that makes sense for you. Setting triangles can be a bugger to figure out sometimes!

Oh gosh! It would have helped if I made a SQUARE instead of 12 1/2 x 13/1/2...Thanks for your help. I started to lay out my square to take a picture and realized the problem! And...I did the before I asked for help and still didn't catch it.

It helps to talk it out!

That's when I go eat chocolate. I eat a lot of chocolate. :D

I was wondering if by chance you'd miscut the square! Glad you figured it out ... and hope you didn't have too much wastage.

A hint ... I oversize the large square (instead of the 13-1/2", I'd cut 14-1/2".
Then X-cut and stitch all triangles in place. Then cut off the excess so you can get the edge of the quilt nice and straight!! (then be sure to leave the 1/4" seam allowance, not cutting too close)

Glad you figured it out. I did that once--made 10x11 squares!

If it ends with chocolate, then it ends well.
