Need ideas for 2" squares
Yesterday I bought thousands of little 2.5" squares at an estate sale of a quilter. Three pizza boxes with darks, mediums and lights. The number of darks and mediums appear to be the same but very few lights by comparison. This makes sense as the boxes were marked "for watercolor quilt". Since these are attractive but not the newest of fabrics, I am choosing not to turn them into a watercolor. How would you sew them? I think for fun I am going to count them (whew!) to calculate how large a piece they would make.
Thanks for any ideas and inspiration. ;-) |

That's the same size as Moda Candy. Any of the Moda Candy patterns would go hand in hand with your pieces. There is a red booklet with 18 patterns in it, and also a blue booklet with 13 patterns in it. I've made 6 of the patterns and they're very easy patterns to make.
Here's a link to one of the booklets: http://www.fatquartershop.com/red-mo...ojects-booklet I've made 6 of the quilts from these 2 booklets, here are pictures of 2... |
https://weddingdressblue.wordpress.c...-charms-quilt/ This is the link for a great quilt to make. I have made it with 2" and 2-1/2" squares. It looks very daunting but once you get into it and and follow the directions for making the sections it goes together rather fast. And you will feel real proud of yourself for finishing this one! There are other ideas on that website too!
Good luck with you project!!! Colleen |
How about a scrappy Burgoyne surrounded
|
Also, check Bonnie Hunter's website: http://quiltville.blogspot.com/p/free-patterns.html. She has some free patterns for 2" squares.

How about the Bonnie Hunter "new scrappy trip around the world". It's on my to do list - and you sure would have a GREAT head start on one. Good luck with that wonderful find !!

If you are going to be making smaller projects, you could use the fusible gridded interfacing to save time and have nice even seams.

There is always a triple Irish chain that looks great with 2 1/2" scrappy squares.

I don't have a pattern or picture to share but I went to an Amish quilt show many years ago and they had a quilt and they were all 2 in or 2.5 inches. But they had arranged them into hearts, with white squares between. I have an old photo but not at home to be able to scan it. They had all different fabrics for the hearts except each one had a red square in the middle.

Bonnie Hunter's leader / ender project for this year is a tumbler quilt. Her blog has free directions.

Lots of wonderful ideas on here, thanks!

What a great find. I love a challenge like that. At our Project Linus events, I always check out the challenge box. It's like putting a jigsaw puzzle together making it all work into something wonderful. Please post a picture for us.

I did a search for Postage stamp quilts. Ooh! The eye candy! Hope you find one you like!

Another thought, have you ever tried hexgons? Hand sewn? 2.5" squares work very nicely for 1" hexies. Also a scrappy Burgoyne Surround?? https://www.google.com/search?q=burg...FUo5iAodxbwE8A

You can also do this:
Quilted it on lawn since bodice is lined. |
I'm working on an owl quilt called "Hoot's Hollow" that requires a lot of 2.5" blocks. It has appliqued panels here and there in it. Perhaps that sort of thing would work with your 2" squares! The applique patterns on this one are 4 blocks high and don't go all the way across. There are 3 blocks on the other side. It's a fun pattern to do!

There are many patterns that I have found which I call 16 Square Block:
https://www.google.com/search?q=16+s...w=1003&bih=614 I made this one for charity: |
There are nine patches that could be laid out several different ways.
|
I do not have a picture of it but I have seen a block where they do a 16 patch block of 2 to 2 1/2" squares and then add a triangle to each side which puts the 16 patch on point. Very nice looking block.

Here is one I want to make. It is with 2" squares, but I think 2 1/2 would work just as well. (I certainly would not trim them down!!!)

Have you ever seen the "Exploding Star Quilt" ? http://bondurantquilts.blogspot.com/

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KNZeR38EIb...0/s320/018.JPG

Exploding star quilt. Designed be Teajuana Mahone.

I've been saving squares for this for years. If I don't get going on it my children will be selling them at the estate sale saying, "I don't know why Mom had this huge box of these little pieces. Maybe she really was a few feet short of a full yard!" Just a suggestion. |
If love to get this pattern. Help!!

I used 2" squares for the colors in my cathedral window quilt.

This will use a ton of those squares...I made this as a wedding present for a friend's son & new wife. It uses 2 1/2" squares & 2 1/2" sashing, but would work for your 2" squares too. Your lights could still be sprinkled throughout if you use white/white for sashing like I did. Make it whatever size you need by adding rows. Mine was 50"x62". Happy sewing!:)

Forgot to say that this was a leader/ender quilt...so work on other things along with doing that. It might take longer to make the quilt, but you won't get bored with it & you will still be finishing other things, too. And those boxes of squares will be used in due time! Like I said, this uses a bunch of them...so since you have a bunch, use them!:p
Throw them in a big bag, grab out, & sew. Only rule is no 2 alike together. I was surprised at how much I liked it in the end. Never thought all those fabrics would go together so well! |
