I have often used ziplock bags for projects like that and sometimes carry them in a small bag with straps.

Just looked and it seems omnigrid makes a travel one. I've attached the link but I did see them cheaper then this one.

I like hard cases for my needles and snips, so I tend toward travel soap dishes or pencil boxes that snap close.

Thank you all for your wonderful ideas and links. Isn't it funny? Sometimes ideas just don't flow. But with all your help, I can now solve my problem. Thanks to all you wonderful quilters.

The makeup tri fold case is perfect, but be careful with the scizzors. They may not allow you to take them on board for safety reasons. Off the top of my head I don't know what to suggest to replace the scizzors. Maybe a letter opener that is shaped in a curve and has a small blade way deep in the inside of the opener. I'm sure you've seen them. The blade isn't exposed in a threatening way.
