Need ideas for a Harry Potter lap Quilt
I have searched the web and the bookcase idea is what generally pops up. Any other suggestions? This is going to be a retirement present 🎁 for my wonderful Dentist. He is a big Harry Potter Fan. Thanks for any suggestions. Photos would be welcome too.

Try Googling Harry Potter paper piecing patterns.

Owl, wand, and Goblet of Fire.

Go to http://fandominstitches.com I made my granddaughter a Harry Potter's bookcase quilt several year ago.
These are all paper pieced blocks. Very well drafted. I was new to paper piecing and never had any problems. Good luck, I know you can do it. |
I second Fandom in Stitches, as long as you're comfortable with paper piecing. They have really great patterns, and dozens of blocks/images to choose from.
Edit: For layout/design, I would probably do the big school crest (finishes at 20" square), then put other blocks around it. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1m...A4akFzVlk/view |
I am really not interested in the bookcase idea or paper piecing, just thought someone may have explored something different. Thanks

Do a sampler quilt, with blocks in the house colors:
Gryffindor (red and gold) Slytherin (green and silver) Hufflepuff (yellow and black) Ravenclaw (blue and bronze) if he is a fan, he will recognize them. |
There are HP panels for easy quilts. Check eBay.

Paper Princess -- that is a great idea, too!

Thanks for your suggestions, I'll look at fandominstitches.com ⭐️

Here is where I found my HP patterns:
http://www.fandominstitches.com/2011...ry-potter.html Sewhooked did the original patterns and she has the Project of Doom on this web site, https://sewhooked.com/harry-potter/ |
My granddaughter and I just made her a hufflepuff quilt. Its yellow and black. Lots of fun to do with her.
Thank You QuiltnLady for the link. I found a hufflepuff to put on the back for a label. |
There are new Harry Potter fabrics at fabric.com. I just saw these this morning. Good luck

you can find it at Over the Rainbow too...either place, not cheap but there are panels you could use as feature fabric with solids or blenders.

My son just made his first quilt and he used Ravenclaw colors (blue & silver) in a 4-patch design. He's ten, so that was as complex as he was going to get. We bought some Harry Potter fat quarters from spoonflower for some of the blues. I bought kona solids for the gray/silver. It turned out cute. Ravenclaw is also my house, and I want to make my own some day with more complex blocks and with the book colors (blue and bronze).

I just purchased a pattern from Etsy, pieces by Polly of hogwarts house quilts. It looks amazing.

My 13 yr old DD is making a HP quilt. The plan is to appliqué HP designs. We sketched out some of the ideas and over time, she will make the blocks. Here are some of the block ideas.
Glasses and lightning bolt, snitch, wand, crest, quiddich goals, caldron, sorting hat, deathly hallows symbol. |
I am sure it will be awesome

What a lovely thing for you to do for him. I'm sure he will be so thrilled at your kindness.
I wanted to do this (but for a Dr. Who quilt). I found 16 paper piece patterns that I liked. But, when I found the weeping angel had over 100 tiny pieces (!!!), I figured I needed to rethink it. I took the patterns and traced over them a much more simple line and did a combination regular piecing and applique. To keep some of the variations used on the angels, I used tone on tone fabrics (and some batiks). Most of the patterns were very easy to remake from paper piecing to an 'easier' method. If you are a paper piecer, that is great, I just have not mastered it. Having a family who has read all the books and watched the films many, many times, I can easily think of a dozen key images that would be great for this quilt. |
I was also going to suggest Fandom in stitches. I have used several of their patterns. If you like to paper piece. Can't wait to see it.

Love to quilt Linda,
I bought my son's Christmas ornament from Pieces by Polly and now I want the quilt designs! |
