I have been asked to make a quilt/wall hanging out of several ribbons won at horse shows, you know, the kind with three 'runners' and a rosette. Problem is, there is not a large selection of colors...and of course, they are a satin type of material. Any ideas?

Can you make s mall wallhanging and applique the ribbons? this way you don't have to sew them to cotton and worry about fraying. Maybe even do them 3D, like sewing them from the top only. Lots of possibilities there.

You could possibly work them into a crazy quilt.

I added some to a log cabin a loooong time ago. They did not have rosettes, though. The gilded printing mainly came off in the wash. I just opened them up, took off the paper label, and worked with them as fabric. I put small circles appliqued over the holes that the string had gone through.

Look at them closely before you do anything - if the rosette was glued in place to the backing, you may have to be creative. Also, check that deep colors like purple are colorfast. I don't remember using stabilizer, but it wouldn't hurt. I would definately suggest a wall hanging would be more suitable than a bed quilt. Maybe a French braid (using the rosette color as the square part (or satin if you do not have enough plain ribbon parts.) around a center medallion of the rosetted ones. Do you have pictures?

Wow...good question because I have wondered what to do with all my kids' 4H ribbons, as well. I like the log cabin idea with the 'normal' ribbons...and I think the champion rosettes could be incorporated as an applique, somehow. I have each kids' ribbons in separate boxes...one of these days, I'll give it a try myself.

Hi,

Why don't you make a quilt with photos on it and then have the ribbons pinned to a block or sew them to a block. Also fabrics with horses would be cool for the horse ribbons.

Have fun and let us know what you come up with for the quilt.

you could also put them in picture frame as a big collage.

As always, I knew I would get some wonderful ideas. Thanks so much for your help. I can't wait to get that box of ribbons and get started!

I would just pin them on, then if you wanted to wash the quilt you could just unpin them.
