need ideas for quilting this
 

This is a five foot square wall hanging ready to quilt on my domestic machine. I want to free motion it. Free motioning is still relatively new to me (I have done it a few times). I don't want intense or complicated, but I want something that is not simplistic. I would love to have some suggestions that are creative, visually appealing, but not too difficult. Any ideas?

I don't have any ideas for you as to the quilting, but I wanted to say your quilt top is stunning!

Look at Leah Day's videos. She has them broke down by skill level. You will find one that you feel comfortable doing that compliments your piecing.

Oh dear. I'm waiting to see what others say. It looks complicated.

Love your quilt! How about a never-ending spiral? Start in the center of the quilt, make a circle and keep spiraling outward. My other idea was stars.

No ideas on the quilting but the top is fabulous!!

Your quilt is beautiful. If you look at all the quilts that viewers have sent in to Judy Niemeyer's site you will see lots of examples of quilting on Glacier Star and similar quilts (and some that are not quilted yet, alas...) Also you can google images for glacier star and find more examples.

Oh, my goodness, your quilt is absolutely stunning! I love the idea of the ever-enlarging spiral. Or look at Leah Day's ideas and do one thing in all the blue areas, something else in the black areas. Let's be honest, the quilt is so gorgeous that no matter what you do you can't go wrong!

Just a caution, not sure from your post if you have done complete tops, or practice pieces. I would make sure you are completely comfortable with FMQing a 60" quilt and not 'practice' on this one. That top is just stunning!
What batting are you using?
As far as the quilting design goes, I would do a combination of SITD and stippling. For instance, SITD the serpentine/flying geese border (not the geese themselves, just around both sides of the the purple border). I would also SITD around the main star and the outside of the B&W new York beauty squares. I would stipple the blue background, this, with the SITD, will make the serpentine border puff a bit. I'd continue with the SITD/Stipple, stippling the areas you want to recede and SITD with no fill the areas you want to be raised. I'd also use different color thread, matching the thread to the area you are stippling. I would want the piecing to be highlighted rather than the quilting.

I'm no help with the quilting, but your top is absolutely beautiful! I love it!

I too hope you have some skills at FMQ. This is a stunning quilt. I would stitch in the ditch with all the flying geese. In the black square background. I would draw lines to quilt (only in the black) like rays of sunrise radiating out from from the corner of each block.

In the red & purple part of the edges of a lone star, SITD than you can do an arch on each side of each diamond. The curve is only no more than 1/2 inch.

The outside edge of the lone star of the black and blue pointed edges I would just SITD.

What to do with the larger blue background and soft multicolor, I am not sure. I would certainly see as many other quilted tops from Judy's pattern by Google this pattern and then clicking on the photo gallery Google has on any search. Good Luck !!

I applaud anyone who can FMQ on a regular machine. All I have ever done is little wall hangings. Mostly I hand quilt anything that is bigger than 2 feet. Whatever you pick, I do hope you will show us some closeups when you are finished.

Thanks everyone for the complements! I was not looking for them at all. This quilt top was completed several months ago, and I have been stewing about how to quilt it. A friend suggested I post it on this board, and I am overwhelmed with all your responses. You have provided new ideas for me to consider, which has energized me to get serious about completing it. I agree to sitd a good amount of it but I would also elongate some of the points. Make it look like the are continuing beyond what we can see

Took my breath away. An amazing quilt. Sorry, I do just basic FMQ and not very good at that. There seem to be some good suggestions here though, a I bet you get some more. Please post when it's all done.
