I have a 24 yr old Kenmore Sewing Machine and I want a newer one with more quilting options etc. What do you think of this one from Sears?
Anyone have this?

How big are your quilts going to be? If they're going to be bed size, you might want to think about getting a machine with a bigger area in which to quilt, I don't remember what it's called. But the one in the picture, although it may have a lot of quilting features, the bed is small and you wouldn't be able to do a big quilt with it.

You want input??:0)I say step out of that arena and go check out the Janome 6600 machine...if you are into embrod. then check out their 10,000. I have a friend that her 30+machine died and wanted to replace it w/what she had too...only to find companies are not making them like they use to. I too wanted to beef up my machine so we both did much homework and both of us were really pleased w/features, performance, etc w/the Janomes. The raves on them are huge and very positive too. I'm not saying any machine is better then another...they are a big investment and we spend much time on them...so do the homework and plug your ears!!:))No matter what store you stand in, you will hear why theirs is better...just find out for yourself. YES, YES!!!! That's my baby... the 19-900!!! It is made by Janome and it has been a lot of fun since I got it in December. I did, however, have to buy the quilting feet package ( around $20 )

Easy to thread, needle up/down, super-easy to do fancy stitches. On rare occassions, I have asked it to do zig-zag with the wrong foot, and it beeped and flashed the light at me, rather than break a needle. Everything I've asked it to do, it does quietly and efficiently. My overall impression was that the designer actually sewed, and didn't just make machines of all sorts.

If you do machine applique, it has a buttonhole stitch from either direction, a great feature for me. There are some fun heirloom stitches and pretty decorative ones. The throat area is larger than my old Singer, so it should handle the machine quilting alright.I have only quilted tablerunners and small things so far, no problems at all.

I got mine on sale just before Christmas, and at the time it was almost $75 cheaper than the same one with a Janome label on. They also threw in a $10 gift certificate because I had to wait in the pickup area.

Ruth Camp did a whole lot of research. If I'm not mistaken, she got a Kenmore, too. There are a lot of threads about what folks like and don't that she could help you find.

I have the Janome Gold Gem. I like it a lot. It's around $299-399ish.

The only think I don't like about it is it doesn't have very many stitches. It doesn't have the satin stitch and I would like to have that stitch.

I have the brother .. the second picture you posted.. I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!! All I can say is well I just LOVE IT!!! It is soooo wonderful.

I have the janome 1600P long arm and a janome memory craft 6500 for regular quilting. If you can save and invest in these machines you will (my opinion) be very happy.

Unfortunately, the second one doesn't have a big bed either, so you'll have the same problem as the first one. You need to get something with a much bigger bed if you're going to be making anything bigger than maybe a twin. I have 2 Elna's, one of which is a Quilter's Dream. Love both of them. I would stay away from the new Singers.

I have a Kenmore also, I love it. it is several years old, and I think they are great.

How long have you had your brother? I had mine 3 yrs when it started acting up. I was thinking of getting another one, but Hubby is afraid I'll have the same trouble. Viking is the only place here that services Sewing machines unless I drive 20 miles to next town. He told me he hates Brothers. :cry:

I'm leaning more to the Kenmore I posted a pic of here. PLUS, I won't have trouble getting it serviced.

I have 2 Kenmore's. One I got in 1970 still works great and the other is about 20 or so years old. Made my first quilt on the 2nd one. I nearly broke my arms. Kenmore doesn't make a machine with a deep enough throat to handle that much fabric. I have a Babylock Professional Quilters's Choice. I couldn't be happier with it. It does free motion quilting as well as straight stitching. It did cost a little over a $1000.00 but it is work every penny. The dealers that sell them will train you on how to use it and they service them. Also I have never had one lick of trouble with it. I had read some bad press on the Janome's but hey everybody has their favorite. See if you can try it out in the store before you buy it. Most sewing centers that sell these type of machines will let you. Happy Shopping. Deb

I think I saw it on EBay or Amazon com. Don't even remember what I was looking for. I think somebody on quilting site was asking about different machines and I looked it up and I think that was the one. I maybe wrong, it's been a long time since I read it. But you know everybody doesn't always like the same machines. I had hoped Kenmore made a quilting machine but they didn't have one with deep enough throat. I wouldn't trade my 2 for anything. My granddaughter is going to get my first one when she gets old enough. Got to start that girl (my only one) off right. She's 4 1/2 and already knows how to stir up biscuits and pancakes. When she was littler she sat in my lap and we sewed. Deb

I miss mine so bad (Brother) Hubby told me to get online last night and order another one. I AM SOOOOOOOOOOOO EXCITED..

I landed up ordering another Brother as i knew how my other one worked, and I loved it. I get it in a week

Bev I have that same brother and I can quilt a nice size lap quilt in it with little to no problem, but the extention for the machine my legs seem to want to collaspe alot. For just starting out it's great with the 1/4 seam which is number 37 if you want a right 1/4 seam (I'm thinking right or left handed people) 38 if left. I haven't had a problem with it knock on wood and the troubleshooting section is great.

The only thing i see wrong with it is if you enjoy quilting now and love it I would bit the bullet and invest in a machine for years to come. Which is what I'm doing and I'll looking at a pfafft machine now, which costs around $5000.00 but at least it's 12 months same as cash.

Hun, I can't work as I'm disabled (from brain tumor) so I can't afford big fancy machines. Hubby is getting me (if I still want) a Kenmore next yr with taxes. The Brother will do fine til then. I sewed for yrs on my other one with no problems

Bev- it's like Christmas!!! You'll be sewing up a storm. Nothing like something new to get the creative juices flowing. Enjoy!!!

I have a Brother as explained in another post, but after having it serviced it got worse. I'm buying another just like it. I just will NEVER have it serviced there again

I have the Pfaff Expression 2038 and I love it to pieces. It has several decorative stitches, including alphabet. But, the feature that I like most about this machine is the integrated dual feed foot. It is an attached walking foot that can be engaged with the touch of a finger. It can be used with many of the accessory feet. Although the bed is just standard size, I also purchased the Fab-U-motion table with stitch regulator which makes machine quilting ever so much easier. No more "wrestling" with moving all the bulkiy quilt sandwich, since the moving table moves the fabric with just your fingertips. now, it is a slight investment to buy machine and the table, but my Pfaff dealer has specials all the time. In my opinion, it was worth every penny and it will be a long, LONG time before I'm ready to upgrade. Nita :)
